nspired by the wooden clinker launches built by Maycraft in Norfolk, and indeed a whole generation of open day boats including the Norwegian fjord designs, Chris Edmondson designed and built a very appealing contemporary classic nicknamed the Mallard by HSC who commissioned three such launches in 2016 including Potter X.

Each launch was crafted around the individual needs of its owners. In this case we have a dark blue GRP clinker hull, bilge pump, horn, canopy, inlaid varnished mahogany decking, stainless steel fittings, off white leatherette upholstery and non slip floor covering. A solid wood table slides neatly in below the dash board and fits into the aft cockpit area. The forward seats swivel to allow everyone to enjoy eating and socialising together around the table. A traditional rope fender and launching eye complete the picture.

In the electric propulsion option the boat is fitted with a Vetus 2.2 kw water cooled electric motor paired with 2 x 170 Ah batteries which should give 6 to 8 hours running at cruising speed. Another pair could be added to double the cruising time.

This is a great little launch for river, lake or estuary. Classic Boat magazine featured the boat in an article in the January 2016 issue when she was launched directly from the trailer in straightforward fashion before going for a trial cruise on the River Bure. According to the journalist “Mayfly (as she was named) proved responsive with the electric motor giving her a good turn of speed while the hull created very little wash. She drew plenty of admiring glances”
