Wooden Ships Comments on this Alan Buchanan Viking Class Sloop
Built by the current owner for himself and launched in 1983. The owner is a time served shipwright and completed the boat to a very good standard.
In the early 1980’s when the idea of building a yacht had surfaced, the owner remembered the line plans of a Buchanan yacht in one of the magazines. After visiting Buchanan himself and discussing his needs, they settled on the plans of the Viking Class. The boat was built in a purpose made dry shed on the banks of Pill Creek near Bristol, a village steeped in boating history and closely connected to the Pilot Cutters. She has been berthed in Pill creek since her launch, cruised from here around the Bristol Channel, south Wales and West Country.
The Viking was a successful design for Buchanan and proved to be a fast and easily handled cruising boat. The relatively shallow draft of 4’7” means she can access areas deeper boats cannot and with a ballast ratio of 43% she is a very stiff and weatherly boat.
A well maintained and solid cruising boat, built and sailed by the current professional shipwright owner.
