Maurice Griffiths needs little introduction as one of the most successful and popular yacht designers of the 20th Century.

Maurice was a great influence in post-war yachting and as editor of Yachting Monthly for many years, he persuaded numerous people to take up yachting at that time. In his designs, he took much of his inspiration from the East Coast working boats built for those shoal waters but was also influenced by some American designs. Maurice is certainly most well known for his smaller shoal draft designs which appealed to the growing number of new yachtsmen at the time. His designs were built in quite large numbers by the small East Coast boatyards and several designs were aimed at the home builder.

‘Lone Gull II’ Maurice designed for himself in the 1960s. Maurice named her ‘Lone Gull II’ because she is a development of the first gaff rigged centre-board keeled ‘Lone Gull’ which was of similar size, although her displacement was much heavier,

‘Lone Gull II’ has a number of interesting attributes that set her apart. She is of raised deck construction which vastly increases her internal volume both in visual and actual terms. She has twin bilge keels (as well as a central lead ballasted keel) which allows her to sit upright when aground. These bilge keels combined with her deep forefoot and long keel allow her to steer herself for long periods of time. Her hull form which has deliberately flattened bilges means she is very steady downwind without any rolling action at all. She is not a racing machine and makes no concessions on that score, but her hull form allows for a steady six knots or more in whatever direction you point her. Her mast is designed to be used in a tabernacle which would make any maintenance and inland waterway access much easier.

LONE GULL II was built in 2002 of carvel construction Pitch pine planked on Oak steamed timbers with Brazilian Mahogany on the sheer planks, twin bilge keels, tiller steering, 30hp Lister Petter LPW S3M diesel, shaft driven inboard engine (about 569
hrs), accommodation consists of one double berth and two single berths in two cabins, galley with gas cooker with 2 burners oven and grill, pressurised water system, sink, separate heads compartment, Z spars, slab reefing, spinnaker pole, four winches, Kemps main and genoa 2004, hank on jib.
Equipment includes compass, Raymarine wind, speed and echo sounder, Lowrance GPS and plotter, Autohelm
autopilot, two anchors with chain, manual anchor windlass.

LUNDY GULL II was built from scratch over a period of twelve years by her former owners, the design is more often found on the East Coast where Maurice Griffiths was based and did most of his sailing. She is considerably bigger looking and heavier that most 28 footers, she has proved to be a good sea boat. She differs slightly from the original design in having a doghouse and an offset companionway, both features taken from her larger sister the 31ft Tidewater Class. The offset companionway leads to much better access to the engine without compromising cabin space. She has sailed extensively around the Channel, with her bilge keels she can go in a variety of harbours.
