In 1945, the journalist and well know children’s author Arthur Ransome, commissioned Jack Giles to design a replacement for SELINA KING. The design was to take only minimum effort to sail and yet offer the ‘maximum comfort for two’. ‘PETER DUCK’, as she was called, was launched in 1947, named after Ransome’s third book about the ‘ancient mariner’ which had just been published.

Over a successive period of twenty years, a total of 38 Peter Ducks were independently commissioned, most of which were built by Porter & Haylett of Wroxham.  The ‘Peter Duck’ class is an attractive shoal-draught ketch and as such has a keen following with an active owners’ association. A good many examples have undertaken extensive ocean voyaging, proving the design to be capable and sea-kindly cruising yachts. This popular family boat is also ideal for coastal cruising, particularly on the East Coast where creeks and anchorages are accessible due to the shoal-draught.

JEMIMA PUDDLEDUCK was built to Lloyds 100A1 by Porter & Haylett for Lord Poole CBE TD in 1962. Traditionally built and designed with a long keel and round bilge. Iroko planked hull, cascover-sheathed, with copper fastened oak timbers, stringers and beam shelves. Transom stern with transom hung rudder. Varnished cabin coamings and cockpit. Plywood decks and coach-roof cascover sheathed. Steel floors and cast iron keel.

OWNERS COMMENTS:
A reluctant sale, we are leaving behind very many happy memories of sailing onboard this beautiful classic ketch. She is a lovely cruising yacht, solid, sturdy and safe, a beautiful yacht and a delight to be onboard. Quaint and classic with many traditional features and incredibly easy to ‘get to know’

She’s very well equipped and well organised and comes from a line of caring owners who have all spent considerable sums of money in maintaining her and kitting her out. We have taken part in the ‘Round the Island’ race and she is race coded by the Island Sailing Club (ISC) in Cowes.
