One of the early Bavaria's well respected models; the 430 Lagoon is of the sturdier generation that was built to Germanisher Lloyd's specifications including Kevlar in the hull moulding's forward sections. A well built yacht with oodles of accommodation featuring the generous owners suite aft layout with a centre-line double berth and large en-suite private heads, with two further cabins forward, and a second heads.
Considered to handle heavier seas more comfortably than her younger sisters, making her suited to economical blue water cruising.
This example has the schoal draught (just 1.6m) winged keel option, Coppercoat multi-season anti-fouling and has had a Volvo Penta D2-55 motor fitted to replace the original engine, with just 282 hrs. recorded since installation.
Aft Mastercabin: This being the 'Lagoon' version of the Bavaria 430, she is provided with a single indulgent master cabin that is accessed through a doorway to port of the engine space. The centre-line berth is 1.6m wide at its widest and a full 2m in length and is provided with a centre-line lee cloth for use at sea. Individual seats are 'mirrored' to each side of the cabin as are the hanging lockers and smaller closed lockers outboard of each seat. Good light and ventilation levels are ensured by four opening portlights to the cockpit and it's coamings, together with two large 470 x 360 hatches that were also intended to offer emergency egress from the cabin.
En-suite aft heads: this is generous in size and fitted with a RM69 marine-flushing toilet (new in 2017), hot and cold water to the hand-basin and separate shower mixer fitted to service a shower area that is large enough to be practicable. A large, opening portlight to the coach roof side provides good light and ventilation.
Navigator's chart table: located to port aft end of the main saloon and abaft the galley, the independent chart table is of good size, with the main 12V DC distribution panel located alongside the navigator's left shoulder and provision for a Garmin plotter/radar display ahead. This unit could not be located on board at time of listing and it must be assumed that the unit itself is not included in the vessel's inventory. Three good sized storage drawers within the chart table's supporting plinth.
A Webasto, diesel-fired hot air heating system is fitted, with thermostat and control located alongside the chart table.
Galley: of linear form, the galley runs along the port side of the main saloon, with the backrest structure to the saloon's centre-line seat unit providing support and security to anyone working in the galley at sea. Stowage abounds within closed lockers outboard of and below the work surfaces, together with generous cutlery and open drawers. Good light levels and - more importantly ventilation - is provided by opening hull ports outboard of the cooker and with large portlights above, within the coach roof side. The cooker looks to be a relatively recent replacement of the original, with a Nelson cooker by Spinflow, with grill and oven plus two hob burners fitted.
Main Saloon: An oval table, fitted to starboard of the centreline, is provided with plenty of seating about both sides. Good light levels are ensured by a large opening deck hatch together with an acrylic panel incorporated within the companionway's garage overhead. Two opening hull ports will offer eye-level interest and sparkling reflections within the cabin - as well as cross-ventilation in high temperature conditions. A CD player by Sony is fitted within the starboard aft under-side deck locker. Some re-finishing of the woodwork around the companionway is in progress.
Forward 'Wing' Cabin (to starboard): located opposite the forward heads, this cabin is provided with two single bunk berths, duplicated closed lockers for each occupant and stowage beneath the lower berth. An opening hull port offers light and ventilation, combined with a deck hatch above.
Forward Heads (to port): Although slightly smaller than the master cabin's en-suite aft, the forward heads is still more generous than many found in this size of yacht and storage is generous with three eye-level lockers and stowage beneath the hand basin's surface. The showering is also by means of a separate mixer unit, with good levels of ventilation and light provided by an overhead hatch and large coach roof side portlight.
Forward cabin: Laid out with a conventional tapered double berth forward of a low-level dressing seat located to port side and half-height hanging locker outboard of that seat.
A Volvo Penta D2 55F 4 cylinder naturally aspirated marine diesel is fitted in place of the original MD22L, together with a replacement gearbox and sail drive unit. Volvo EVC Engine control panel.
It is believed this new engine package was fitted in 2006 but little used since, supported by a current engine hour reading of only 288.2 hours.
The engine drives a three-bladed, fixed propeller and a rope cutter by Ambassador Marine is fitted.
Two battery banks are located beneath the main saloon's seating and comprise of:
2 x 119 A/hr batteries by Varta for domestic and services.
1 x 110 A/hr battery for engine cranking.
Batteries charging by engine driven alternator or shore supply battery charger - an Aerogen wind generator unit is fitted to the stern pushpit but appears to be unserviceable.
Fuel Tank: 130 litre stainless steel, located beneath aft berth.
Freshwater: 2 tanks;
217 litre stainless steel tank located beneath aft berth.
170 litre polypropethylene tank located beneath foot end of forward berth.
17 litre calorifier located above the engine for domestic hot water.
A masthead rigged bermudan sloop with deck stepped Isomat mast fitted with continuous cap and intermediate shrouds over double spreaders; aft lowers and single baby stay. Single, bifurcated backstay and single for'stay that is fitted with a 'Furlex' roller furling system for the head sails.
A fixed length spinnaker pole is vertically stowed against the front face of the mast.
A slab reefed, full-width battened mainsail is contained within a 'Stack-Pack style of sail cover. There are three reefs. All lines come back to the cockpit area. The head sail is roller-reefed and the sheet cars are of the 'towing' type.
A 'rod' kicker is fitted to assist in the reefing of the mainsail.
Sails
This early Bavaria is of reputable quality against a relatively high original design specification. She has been in her sole (joint) ownership since new and has enabled long term (private) leisure cruising.
'Nessun Dorma' has spent some while in the Mediterranean sun, and at some stage has had some areas of the deck moulding hand painted, mainly around the original smooth Treadmaster anti-slip panels. This was not done in recent years and the two-pack finish used is now beginning to look a little dull or 'chalky'.
The winged keel has recently been grit blasted back to bare metal, filled/faired and primed/coated with International VC-Tar ready for overcoating with either fresh Coppercoat or a conventional anti-fouling paint.
As noted elsewhere above, 'Coppercoat' is applied to the rest of her underwater surfaces, this has been touched up in a number of areas within the last 18 months, but the resulting finish is not aesthetically pleasing, so some thought has been given to keying the surface and overcoating with primer and conventional antifouling.
After a period out of use, 'Nessun Dorma''s accommodation area and domestic systems will require some attention and updating (for example the wind generator is unserviceable and there are no P.V. panels) but she has been priced to reflect the need for some work and she does represent a lot of boat for a very attractive price.
