Accomodations

A beautiful, comfortable classic design with a light ash interior.  A great couples cruising boat with room for a crew.  Forward a beautiful V berth cabin with good storage outboard port, starboard and forward along with hanging locker two additional lockers and a drawer.  There is a separate access to the head from the forward cabin. Next aft to port is the large head with shower and lots of storage.

The main salon has great ventilation and light.  The boat has 11 opening ports and two deck hatches, providing lots of cross ventilation while on the hook or tied dock side. The large dining table  drops to provide a large double berth along with a settee that expands allowing for a much more comfortable single and an outboard pilot berth to starboard.  Lots of room for cruising friends.  A convenient hanging locker at the  base of the companionway along with an additional hanging locker forward.  A stack of drawers and storage cabinets to handle all your cruising gear. A beautiful brass clock and barometer mounted on the forward bulk head along with 4 reading lights and 110 outlets make the salon a comfortable place to spend time.  Hand holds line the ceiling.

The U shaped galley has a double stainless sink near the centerline with good dish storage and cabinet space for food and supplies.  A large SeaFrost refrigeration system to handle supplies on long cruises. A gimbled Force 10 stove /oven with two  propane tanks for hot meals at sea.

Construction

Hull construction is a combination 1-1/2-ounce mat, 18-ounce biaxial, and 24-ounce directional fiberglass set in polyester resin with an isopththalic gelcoat. The first two laminations are vinylester, which have proven superior in preventing blistering. Airex core, 5/8-inch thick, is standard. The deck is balsa-cored. The hull/deck joint is bonded with 3M 5200 and through-bolted every six inches.

In their heyday, the BI 40 had a good racing record. In the 1960 Bermuda Race six of the first 11 places were won by BI 40s.
