Catalina Yachts is one of the largest and most well-respected brands of mid-sized sailing yachts in the world. The American brand was founded in 1969 and has built tens of thousands of boats in its facilities. Search for new and used Catalina Yachts for sale and refine your search by model number, price, age, or location.
Catalina Yachts is a multiple award-winning American yacht company and one of the largest boat manufacturers in the world, having built over 80,000 boats. It was founded by Frank Butler in 1969 and has since built a diverse range of sailing yachts ranging from dinghies as small as eight feet up to mid-sized bluewater cruisers.
Today Catalina Yachts operates out of its headquarters in Florida, and its ethos is the same as when it was founded in Southern California—to build quality yachts for true sailors. Where other brands push the boundaries of innovation, Catalina takes a different approach, using tried and tested design and construction methods and improving on them every time. It is also well-known for its customer service, listening closely to feedback from owners and sailors, and using that to improve sailability, performance, and comfort of its models.
The first model built was the Catalina 22 back in 1969, and it proved so popular that it sold 5,000 models in its first five years. Since then, dozens of models and versions have been built, and it’s an unusual marina in the US that doesn’t have a Catalina in residence.
Catalina has gathered many awards, accolades, and firsts, including SAIL magazine naming that iconic first Catalina 22 “trailerable boat of the decade.” In 1982, Patrick Childress put the brand even further on the map by completing a two-and-a-half-year singlehanded circumnavigation in his Catalina 27, and in 1990 the Catalina 37 was selected and built especially for the Congressional Cup. Catalina models have also been named Cruising World magazine’s “Boat of the Year” multiple times.
There are 12 models across three ranges in Catalina’s current lineup, which all build off the huge successes of their predecessors. The Sport Series offers fun, capable, trailerable day cruisers, with seven models ranging from the pocket-sized Catalina 12.5 EXPO to the Catalina 275 Sport. The focus of these boats isn’t luxury or long-distance cruising, but a way to enjoy the simplicity of sailing in a safe and capable sailing yacht. With tiller steering, a small cabin in the larger models, and an easy-to-sail but fast rig with large main and self-tacking jib, it’s easy to see why this is one of Catalina’s best-selling ranges.
The Cruiser Series, which comprises the Catalina 315 and the Catalina 355, has taken the fundamental attributes of the award-winning Catalina 445 into a more compact package. These include Catalina-designed safety and handling features such as the StrikeZone collision bulkhead, which is fully watertight; the SecureSocket mast support system; and the DeepDefense rudder system. The interiors are beautifully designed, with classic styling and an impressive use of space. Complete with cabins, galleys, heads, dinettes, and lots of storage, they make for highly capable cruisers.
The Ocean Series includes the Catalina 385, the Catalina 425, and the Catalina 445, and offers the latest in a long line of bluewater cruisers. Designed for long-term living and long-range cruising, they are renowned as being some of the safest and most comfortable round-the-world cruisers. The Catalina 445 is the largest in the brand’s current lineup and offers a low-profile cabin structure, twin helm stations, and a spacious cockpit with a table that seats four to six guests. The interior is hugely spacious and highly functional, and the design incorporates an innovative and versatile aft cabin on the port side.
Due for release in the near future is the new 6 Series of Catalina Yachts which will include models 316, 356, 386, 426, and 446.The 6 Series premiered at the Annapolis sailboat show as a 2024-25 Cruising World Boat of the Year nominee.
Catalina Yachts has a huge inventory of previous models and as such, the used market is awash with yachts that offer good value for money. They are built to last and renowned for their safety and build quality so models such as the Catalina 28, Catalina 445, Catalina 30, and Catalina 545 are hugely popular.
