Manufacturer Provided Description
This craft has its origin in the small working craft used by the local pilots and fisherman as boarding boats. The long shallow keel enables her to be launched and sailed straight off the beach and she can be run ashore without damage on landing. The ballast in the keel gives her better stability than dinghies of a similar size and a more sea kindly motion. The craft has rigid buoyancy built in and is certified as a category 'C' craft for 3 persons under the EU recreational craft directive.
Like all the Character Boats the 'Lytham Pilot' can be launched with the rudder and engine in place as these are protected by the keel, and can therefore be sailed immediately afloat without the hassle of getting out into deeper water to ship a rudder or lower a centreplate.
They are sturdy little boats with good sailing performance, ideal for teaching children to sail or for the owner who wants a small but stable and forgiving craft.
The Lytham Pilot has two mast positions allowing use wither as a single sailing rig with the mast forward for simple leisurely sailing or with the mast aft and with the jib fitted for for more performance. The boat is well balanced under either sail plan. With the efficient gunter rig the spars are a similar length to the boat making them easy to transport. The mainsail is set up for easy reefing afloat should the need arise.
She has a stowage locker under the foredeck and an aft locker which is large enough to store a small 4 stroke outboard and its bracket plus spare fuel etc. The outboard engine is mounted on a removable bracket which simply slots into a base plate mounted on the transom which is less obtrusive than a permanent bracket. Oars are stowed along the side seating leaving the cockpit unobstructed.
There is a purpose designed trailer which makes towing, launching and recover easy. It is equipped with highspeed balloon tyres for effortless use over soft ground.
