Overview

Owning a unique part of AMERICAN MARITIME HISTORY places one in an elite class of fortunate yacht owners. Few classic American-built yachts from the early 1900s are still navigating the waters today. While some are preserved in maritime museums, the opportunity to join this exclusive club is now available.

Boat Details

Model: 1930 47' ACF LIBERTE

This yacht represents a chance to join a prestigious international club. Built during a time when yachts of this caliber were reserved for the extremely wealthy, LIBERTE is a rare find.

History

AMERICAN CAR & FOUNDRY (ACF) was established in New Jersey in 1899. In 1901, ACF acquired a train car manufacturing company that included a shipyard, Jackson and Sharp, in Wilmington, Delaware. They produced rail cars until 1920 and built minesweepers, schooners, barges, and private yachts from 1918 to 1945.

In 1929, Griswald J. Hayward ordered a custom-built ACF 47' cabin cruiser, HELEN. The name changed to MAXINE in 1932 when purchased by Max Bear. In 1943, MAXINE was sold to Julius Sylvack, then to the Morton's officers and cadets club in 1944, renamed MORTON. After five years, she was sold to William Nobles, Jr. in late 1949 and renamed JOYCE until 1962. Between 1962 and 1973, she was renamed LIBERTE and sold in 1993 to her current owner. Under his care, she has undergone extensive rebuilding and maintenance.

Condition and Features

LIBERTE features a C-Flex applied to her solid mahogany hull, resulting in a fiberglass bottom that is resistant to common wooden hull issues. She has received numerous awards over the past 30 years as part of the classic boat show circuit in the Southern States.

Described as a head-turner and a one-of-a-kind yacht, LIBERTE is one of the last remaining ACF 47' CRUISERS known to exist, making her a significant piece of AMERICAN MARITIME HISTORY.

Availability

Her current custodian is reluctantly putting LIBERTE on the market due to health concerns. She is available for inspection in her boat house in Madisonville, LA. Courtesy showings and video walkthroughs are available. A photo album with over 450 photos and videos can be provided upon request.

LIBERTE is ready for a new custodian to continue her legacy of aristocratic cruising.

Walkthrough

Upon first seeing LIBERTE, you will admire her beautiful, majestic lines. The covered cockpit features built-in bench seating, free-standing chairs, and a stowable table for 4-6 people. Two varnished companionway doors with the ACF golden crest lead to the spacious aft stateroom, which includes built-in bureaus and a hanging locker. The stateroom is adorned with matched mahogany wood paneling and has large windows for natural light.

The head compartment, originally a full head, now contains a Jabsco marine toilet and a Raritan ice maker, which can be removed to restore the full head functionality. The engine is accessible from this compartment or the galley through removable panels.

Proceeding to the convertible main saloon/helm/second stateroom, this area features exquisite mahogany paneling, a built-in secretary, and concealed Pullman berths. The helm station is well-lit with large windows and includes a pilothouse door for easy access to the foredeck and aft deck.

The decks are white with teak treads, and a new Lewmar windlass with remote controls is located in the pilothouse. The yacht features a hinged mast for low bridge clearance and a large stainless steel searchlight controlled from the helm.

Construction

The ACF shipbuilders were known for constructing strong, safe, and sea-kindly boats. Here are some build stats:

  • STEM: 4” White Oak
  • KEEL: 4” Yellow Pine
  • SHAFT LOG: 6” White Oak
  • STERN PANEL: Mexican Mahogany 1 ¾”
  • FLOOR TIMBERS: White Oak 1 3/8” to 1 ¾” at engine compartment
  • PLANKING: Oregon Fir 1 3/8” with Bronze fasteners

In the late 1990s, LIBERTE received a C-Flex upgrade to ensure her longevity, providing a fiberglassed bottom that preserves her hull integrity.
