Wooden Ships Comments on this Knud Reimers Tumlare Sloop

Tumlare designed by Knud Reimers, one of 6 boats sailed to the Aldeburgh, Suffolk in 1935. Built by Hjalmar Johannson in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1935.

This distinctive yacht, developed from the Scandinavian Skerry Cruiser type, was designed in the 1930’s with many examples built in Sweden. In the UK, a class grew up in Aldeburgh and St Mawes but the design really came to fame after Adlard Coles won the 1950 Trans-Atlantic Race in the slightly larger (32’) Cohoe. In Heavy Weather Sailing, Adlard Coles describes a cruise in the Tumlare Zara when he experienced quite extreme conditions in the Channel.

The Tumlare has a slim, slippery hull with elongated forward sections and the distinctive canoe stern with stern-hung rudder.

She has a high aspect fractional Bermudian rig with the fore-stay set well inboard from the stemhead.

This yacht was rebuilt by Scottish boat builder David Spy in 1992 for a client who never put the boat afloat but did have the hull and decks totally rebuilt. She was later discovered in a barn in 2009, more refit work completed and has been professionally maintained by Demon Yachts of Alderburgh and Geoff Hunt Boat Building ever since.

She comes with a double axle road trailer and a complete suit of quality sails from One Sails. A very well presented example of the class.

Construction

  • Carvel planked in mahogany above the waterline, Oregon pine below.
  • Laminated oak timbers with bronze screw fastenings. Intermediate steamed oak timbers with copper rivet fastenings. It is understood the laminated frames were fitted in the 1990’s to replace the original galvanised steel frames.
  • The hull has been sheathed externally with thin epoxy glass cloth, a lightweight cloth layer intended to reduce the annual maintenance required. This work was done post 2009, the hull was very dry having not been in the water for many years and the planking was in very good condition prior to the sheathing. It was applied purely to cut down on maintenance rather than to repair a tired hull which the concern many people have with a sheathed hull.
  • Oak floors across the centreline with stainless steel throat bolts.
  • External lead ballast keel fastened with bronze bolts. Bolts new in 2010.
  • Marine plywood deck sheathed in epoxy glass cloth with varnished mahogany king plank and covering boards and a small toe rail out board.
  • Bronze cleats and fairleads.
  • Forehatch on the foredeck.
  • Small coachroof with varnished mahogany coamings and a sheathed plywood coachroof deck.
  • Typical Tumlare cockpit with a varnished mahogany thwart across the aft end and a bridge deck to the companionway. Central oak post to carry the mainsheet.
  • Wooden rudder hung on the stern post with stainless straps and a varnished ash tiller.

Rig

  • Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped varnished spruce mast. Mast new from Collars in 2012.
  • Substantial mahogany mast step spans 3 floors to spread the loads of the rig.
  • Slab reefing varnished spruce boom from Collars, 2012.
  • Stainless steel standing rigging new in 2012. Internal stainless steel chain plates.
  • Lower and intermediate shrouds each side with jumper struts above. Adjustable split standing backstay and running backstays on tackles.
  • Pair of Harken 6 winces on the coachroof and a pair of Anderson cockpit sheet winches.
  • Clutches on the coachroof for running rigging lines.
  • Bartels below-deck furler for the headsail, new 2022.
  • Sails from One Sails include Mainsail, 2 x genoas, jib and 2 x spinnakers, full details below.
  • 2 alloy spinnaker poles.
