'Ethel Rose' is a beautiful and capable bespoke daysailer, developed from a design by B.B. Crowninshield, one of the most respected designers from America's Golden Age of wooden yacht design. Professionally crafted to the highest standards and inspired by her first owner's love of Spirit Yachts, she uses modern strip-planked epoxy construction techniques and an updated underwater profile to create a true modern classic. Looking and performing like a baby J-Class, with sparkling performance well suited to competitive racing, she is still easily manageable for short-handed sailing on a pleasant day thanks to her simple cockpit layout. A unique opportunity for a classic enthusiast who wants a premium quality yet low maintenance wooden yacht, maybe something more exclusive or stylish than a Rustler 24 or Rebel 16, and at a fraction of the current build cost (likely PS70k+). She was used and maintained by her professional boatbuilder owner until 2024 when she was purchased by her current owner, who unfortunately has not been able to use as much as he intended and has decided to part with her. A 2024 survey is available to interested parties.

The Safe Harbour 12 is a development of a design by B.B. Crowninshield, one of the most respected designers from America's Golden Age of wooden yacht design. Paul Fisher, of Selway Fisher Design, updated the original design for the 'Dark Harbor 12' to take advantage of modern construction techniques and optimised her underwater profile, whilst still retaining the charm and stylish lines of the original design.
'Ethel Rose' has been built to an exceptionally high standard using top quality materials by her first owner, a master shipwright. The hull is constructed of Cedar strip 16 x 35mm planks laid on 12mm Bruynzeel marine ply (Lloyds specification 04/00407) and Iroko frames, then covered in two layers of multiaxial fibreglass cloth (first 292gm, second 86gm), followed by four coats of Nautix high build epoxy, and finished off with four coats of two-pack green marine paint. Her decks are premium quality 7.5 x 45mm teak planks epoxy bonded to Bruynzeel 6mm marine ply subdecks, with complementing Sapele and Iroko seats, cappings, upstand, and finishing details. A Thurton Foundry cast lead long fin keel is substantially attached with six 18mm, A4 stainless steel keel bolts with 6mm stainless steel plates. All deck fittings and fixings are high-grade stainless steel, professionally custom fabricated where necessary. She is finished off with an Ash tiller steering a spade rudder, modified from the original design to improve handling and general behaviour both under sail and when manoeuvring.
During the build, 'Ethel Rose' was regularly inspected by a marine surveyor, with a final report raised in May 2010 for insurance purposes stating that she had clearly been "a labour of love" and that her builder had "strived for absolute perfection in every stage and detail, no matter how small". Although now over fifteen years old, she has been lightly used with short sailing seasons, and wintered ashore undercover for the majority of the time. She has been maintained to a very high standard and remains in excellent condition, and in our opinion, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a unique and charming day sailer that will turn heads everywhere she goes! An April 2024 survey concluded that she "was built to a very high standard" and had no recommendations at the time.
