Sydney Herreshoff was a successful designer and wanted to produce an easily handled but capable day sailing boat. They are known to be fast little boats, quite capable and with a small cabin have the option of spending nights aboard. Weighing only 1.25 tons the Islander can be easily towed on the road for hassle free and cost effective ownership. Length on Deck 21’ Length Waterline 16’ Beam 5’7” Draft 3’9” Weight 1.25 tons Sail area 190sqft Construction Carvel planked in 5/8” mahogany fastened to steamed oak timbers with bronze screws. Varnished double diagonal transom. Cascover sheathed below the waterline. Topsides finished in 2 pack paint. Sawn wooden floors across the centreline with long throat bolts through the floors and the keel. External cast iron ballast keel of 500kg, fastened with monel keel bolts tapped into the ballast keel. Marine plywood deck painted with epoxy paint. Varnished mahogany rubbing strake and shallow mahogany toe rails. Small coachroof with varnished mahogany coamings and epoxy sheathed plywood coachroof deck. Open cockpit with lifting slatted thwarts either side. Varnished slatted sole boards. Tiller steering to a wooden rudder with recent bronze pintles. Rig Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped alloy mast with a slab reefing alloy boom. Stainless steel standing rigging new in 2015, to internal stainless steel chain plates. Twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud over a set of spreaders. Single adjustable standing backstay. Jumper struts to support the mast around the forestay. Jib hanks on to the forestay. Main and jib halyards run aft to the cockpit. Both mainsail and jib new from A.T. Sails in 2015. Machinery Tohatsu 3.5hp 2 stroke outboard engine mounts over the port side with a removable stainless steel bracket. Accommodation Simple cabin with 1 single berths and sitting headroom.
