Wooden Ships Comments on this Maurice Griffiths Good Hope ketch Good Hope ketch designed by Maurice Griffiths and built by Whisstocks of Woodbridge in 1968. This is the first boat built, named Good Hope and designed to be a comfortable and spacious cruising yacht that is easy to handle and safe. She features a manageable ketch rig, sheltered helm position under the wheelhouse, centre cockpit with an aft cabin and spacious living accommodation. 7 berths including a large double. She has been in the present ownership since 1996 and used for sailing around the West Country and English channel, frequently single handed proving how easy she is to sail. She had a new Volvo 55hp diesel fitted in 2006 which has been well maintained and cared for. A fantastic live aboard cruising yacht with plenty of space at a sensible price. Length on Deck 38'6" Length Waterline 30'5" Beam 11' Draft 4.3" Thames Tonnage 16TM     Construction Planked in iroko copper fastened to Canadian Rock Elm steamed timbers. Underwater hull sheathed in Cascover from new. External iron ballast keel with steel keel bolts. Galvanised steel strap floors across the centreline with ferrous bolts. Marine plywood deck, GRP sheathed externally and finished in non slip deck paint. Step in the deck with a raised aft deck to increase volume in aft cabin.. Very high tow rail from step running forward with galvanised stanchions. Iroko coachroof coamings, painted externally with a sheathed plywood coachroof deck Varnished iroko wheelhouse, open backed with a canvas cover. Wheel steering with cables. Also a tiller on the aft deck.     Rig Bermudan ketch rig on deck stepped alloy masts and alloy slab reefing booms. Standing rigging a mix of stainless steel and galvanised, approximately 20 years old. Stainless rigging screws to internal galvanised chain plates Cutter headed with hanked on staysail to the inner forestay with a staysail boom. Jib on a Profurl roller furling system. Mizzen, mainsail, staysail, jib, mizzen staysail and cruising chute. Pair of self tailing bronze sheet winches in the cockpit. 3 mast winches.     Machinery Volvo Penta D2 55-C 4cyl 55hp diesel installed new in 2006. AquaDrive coupling and stainless shaft to a centreline 3 blade feathering Kiwiprop propeller gives 5.5 knots cruising speed, 7.5 knots max. Fuel consumption of 2 litres/hour. Painted steel fuel tanks outboard of the engine. 3 x 12 volt batteries for engine starting and domestics. Charged from engine alternator or battery charger through 240 volt shore power system.     Accommodation 7 berths in total, double in the aft cabin, 2 saloon settee berths and a pilot berth plus 2 single berths in forward cabin. Starboard side entrance to the aft cabin from the cockpit. Large double berth to port. Starboard side set up for storage plus a large 12 volt cool box/fridge. Cockpit is totally enclosed when canvas back is set up giving a sheltered and dry space. Engine under cockpit sole. Steps down from the cockpit into the main cabin with chart desk to starboard and galley to port. Chart desk faces outboard with a drawer and storage locker beneath Galley is U-shaped with a higher level work surface on the centreline and vertical grab rail. Nelson 2 burner gimballed gas stove with oven and grill. Single sink with manually pumped fresh water. Huge amount of storage space above and below the galley. Main saloon separated off by half height bulkheads with vertical grab rails. Large centreline dropleaf table with port and starboard settee berths. Starboard side there s a pilot berth under the deckhead. Diesel fired cabin heater mounted on the sole on the forward bulkhead. Gimballed paraffin lamps on the coamings. Port side door going forward with heads compartment to port. Heads has a Lavac sea toilet which discharges directly overboard. Stainless steel hand basin with manually pumped fresh water. Forward cabin has 2 V-berths. Good headroom with forehatch over. Storage space below the berths.
