The condition or level of safety equipment on board is not to be negotiated on following survey. It is likely to be listed by most surveyors but is not structural or an integral working part of the vessel and is not to be used to further negotiate the price down after survey. We strongly suggest that for your own personal safety that when purchasing a yacht you provide new safety equipment rather than relying on second hand gear.

Should you become the new owner of this yacht then the responsibility to re-register or update official bodies for items such as EPIRB, VHF, MMSI or AIS becomes yours.

Owners Comments

Al Shaheen is a semi custom designed aluminium off shore cruising yacht. She has proven herself to be both fast and competent with many ocean miles under her belt. The original concept was specified by a past commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club for extended ocean passages by a couple, yet perfectly manageable for single handed sailing. The designer, Mike Pocock, who was also an experienced ocean sailor and himself commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club had previously designed two very similar 45’ distance cruisers. ‘Troubadour’ and ‘Brown Bear’ built in cedar epoxy were both highly regarded as passage makers.. Later two further 42’ cruisers were built, one of which was also built of aluminium for high latitudes sailing. This boat was largely singlehanded including passages around Cape Horn, to Antarctica and to Greenland.

The previous owner of Al Shaheen (Arabic for Peregrine Falcon) sailed over 35,000 miles in her. This included passages in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Canaries, West Indies, Bahamas, East Coast USA including the intercoastal waterway, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Azores and the Baltic.
She was maintained meticulously by him and completely repainted in Fox’s in Ipswich in 2014.
We bought the boat in 2016 and have sailed in the UK, France, the Azores, Gibraltar, Spain, Balearics, North Africa and Greece.

We came from a cruising and racing background and wanted a boat that not only could we be confident would look after us through any weather and any seastate but also sail well. She has not disappointed. As you would expect from her hull shape and keel she has a reassuring motion in a seaway and she is satisfyingly responsive to trim. She has a keel stepped well supported mast with straight spreaders to allow for downwind sailing and forward and aft lowers as well as the usual cap shrouds and intermediates. Her sail plan is very flexible with close coupled headsails. This is not a cutter rig. She is sloop rigged with the benefit of a slightly smaller headsail immediately available for short tacking or when the wind gets up. We rarely have to sail with a partially furled headsail. The genoa is good upwind up to 20 knots and then we change down to the working jib. She will make very good progress to windward tacking through no more than 90 degrees in reasonable conditions. She has a powerful fully battened main with the reefing winch on the coach roof. This allows safe reefing while sitting centrally behind the mast without the potential complications and friction of lines led aft. She has a cruising chute for broad reaching and the tack can be flown off one of her poles for dead downwind. There is a baby stay with associated check stays and a storm jib. She has twin spinnaker poles for twin headsail sailing downwind in the trade winds. She will sail in anything more than 6 knots of wind and is in her element at 15 knots. She has seen many squalls and storms and the previous owner continued sailing in 65 knots of wind.

She is most definitely not a typical coastal cruiser for family and friends but she works well with adequate accommodation for 4 for short periods. The three sea berths in the main saloon were comfortable with a 4 person watch system on passage to and from the Azores. She does work best for a long-term cruising couple who might take on a third crew member for longer passages. The double in the forward cabin also has a lee cloth and it was comfortable at sea except in the largest swells. We have regularly holiday cruised in the Med with two couples as the double heads allow sufficient privacy for a week or two. The generous galley works very well on passage with a large efficient fridge, fiddles, hand hold, crash bar and bum strap.

We embarked on a programme of renovation prior to our passage to the Azores in 2018. This included replacement of all the standing rigging, replacement of running rigging as needed, new Genoa, removal and servicing of all the seacocks, replacement of the Perspex in the Lewmar hatches, replacing the main steering compass, reupholstering the main saloon to include removable breathable and waterproof additional seat covers, replacement spray hood and Bimini and mainsail cover, replacement jackstays, adding a Jordan series drogue and additional backing plates for the aft deck cleats for safe attachment, new Danbuoy, a new EPIRB and a new liferaft. We are happy with her original ST 60 wind and multifunction displays but we upgraded the plotter to a Raymarine Axiom Pro and we run Smartertrack computer based navigation as well. The AIS system sends a feed to both the plotter and the computer based programme. There are multiple sources of GPS data. We replaced all the copper and rubber gas pipes and added a set of world wide gas connectors. We have also added some semiflexible solar panels to the bimini. We did not want to add a stainless arch because of aloft weight and stability considerations. These panels help keep the batteries topped when on anchor for a few days. The Pactor modem was rebuilt to provide email and download weather grid files via the SSB radio.

Since then we have also reconditioned the seawater cooled fridge compressor and replaced the cooling plate, replaced various pumps and changed the prop-shaft seal. Two screens have been replaced on the autohelm control units because of sun damage. The engine battery was replaced in 2019 and the three service batteries were replaced with carbon foam batteries in 2021. All the fire extinguishers have been replaced in 2022. We have just replaced the suede steering wheel cover.

The engine, which is the original Yanmar is modest in size compared to some similar sized Mediterranean cruisers but we understand this was recommended by the designer as it would be operating within its optimum range and give the best fuel economy. We were grateful for this on passage from Falmouth to the Azores for a Rally when we had to motor for several days because of lack of wind. Several other boats had to abandon the passage and divert to Portugal because they did not have enough fuel. The engine has been very reliable and always professionally winterised and serviced.

The main fuel tank is integral to the keel to keep the centre of gravity low and diesel is pumped either electrically or manually to a day tank from where it is gravity fed to the engine and the diesel heater. She carries 300 litres diesel in the stainless steel main tank and a further 50 litres in the day tank. There are twin SS water tanks with a total capacity of 690 litres.

We keep up a regular schedule of servicing and repairs as needed. There is a large inventory of spares, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sail repairs, gas solenoid, spare alternator, filters etc. The ultrasound survey in 2016 showed no evidence of wastage or corrosion of the aluminium plating. Localised areas of paint failure have started to appear on some parts of the deck although the topsides remain sound. Some local repairs and repainting have been done but this will need an ongoing programme to keep her looking her best. She has nine Anderson winches and all have been stripped, cleaned, checked and relubricated in 2022.

There is no accommodation aft of the main saloon, instead there are vast cockpit lockers for storage.
There is also a large amount of storage in various lockers in the main saloon, and under all the bunks.

She has been designed as a low power usage boat and she has back up manual pumps including galley fresh and seawater water pumps. Battery charging is provided by a wind generator, modest solar panels and a tow generator when offshore as well as the 80A engine alternator of course. The Monitor self steering works very effectively, especially as her sail plan makes her an easy to balance boat. We have not had any need for a generator and we can be happily self sufficient keeping the beers cold with the efficient seawater cooled fridge.

We have successfully managed Med style life in Al Shaheen. We were not prepared to give up the precious Monitor self steering to do stern to mooring but we have added a bracket for a passarelle. The Rocna anchor, powerful Lofrans Tigres windlass and deep anchor locker have kept us out of trouble in the busiest of anchorages. We haven’t yet needed to resort to any of the three spare anchors. She has a bathing ladder and there is a teak and stainless boarding ladder for midships. A deck shower is provided by a long hose from the forward heads head shower coming up through the hatch near the mast.

Al Shaheen has been confined to the Ionian for the last couple of years partly because of Covid and partly because of visits from friends and family and the arrival of grandchildren. We hope that new owners will be able to utilise her capability more fully.
