New Bottom Paint and Zincs - December 2019

New Bluewater Baby Center-console Dinghy w/ 20 hp O/B

This catamaran will stand out in your mind as having some great ideas, as a result of many years experience from these owners that designed it like they wanted.

From the dock you will notice the saloon has the ruggedness of a commercial vessel, with sturdy aluminum frame windows. There are seven windows that open on the sides and rear. The rear windows can remain open due to the cockpit overhang. The forward windows are fixed for bluewater safety. For fresh air you have the forward cockpit door that can also stay open due to the bimini.

Coming through the saloon, you will notice that you really have 360 views all around, and with 7 windows that allow fresh air in. A VERY spacious home size kitchen/galley to port and opposing dinette to starboard, make for a large saloon that even has an indoor helm. Not just a Nav Station, but a real helm with a captain's chair. But wait! There's a door in the front of the saloon that leads to a second cockpit that accommodates 6 guests with a second helm. Well this is different, and makes total sense, as a stern cockpit usually gets very hot at sunset. Plus the forward cockpit, allows for everyone to be in the action while sailing. And it's far back enough from the bows that spraying isn't a concern. You see something like this in larger million dollar performance catamarans. But this one has seating for 6 guests!

Another interesting feature is the center pod which breaks waves and delivers more flotation on a wave. It's where the diesel tanks are, and plenty of room to more than double the current diesel capacity there if desired.

So please read on about this boat, and who knows? They might cause a revolution is catamaran layouts.

The story ...

The Watercats 46ph (pilothouse) was designed by multihull legend Derek Kelsall and built by the owners of a boatbuilding company for their own use.

The design and building process is the distillation of a lifetime love of sailboats and live-aboard and cruising multihull experience.

Superbly maintained, stored on fresh water, and conveniently located in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

History
Designer Derek Kelsall is a multihull legend and the first person to cross the Atlantic on a multihull. Derek also owned a boatbuilding yard which produced several round the world racing yachts. For the last few decades he has been on the forefront of multihull design with many designs currently in production. The Watercats 46ph is a unique yacht, the embodiment of the owners' lifetime of boatbuilding, cruising and liveaboard experiences on multihull sailboats.
For their ultimate cruising yacht, the goal was to produce a cruising sailboat designed to voyage anywhere in the world in safety, seaworthiness and unparalleled liveaboard comfort. No expense was spared to make the Watercats 46ph light, strong, safe and fast. Each piece of equipment was installed because it was the best. Period. Each piece of equipment was also viewed through a lens of how it could be removed for maintenance if needed.
Some production catamarans require a major deconstruction to replace aging aluminum fuel tanks or remove an engine. This is not so with the Watercats 46ph. The fiberglass fuel tanks are custom made and easily removed if ever needed. The engines and generator are separate from the living quarters and can be removed with onboard lifting points or a dockside crane, without going through the living quarters.
Wiring is easily accessible and not hidden behind nonremovable panels. All makes maintenance easy and secure.
This yacht is a must see to appreciate all that she provides.

Interior

The interior of the Watercats 46ph was designed by Karen Rogers based on her 20 years of multihull liveaboard experience.

MAIN CABIN

The main cabin is surrounded by windows for a 360° view of the ocean and coast. The main steering station is inside the main cabin, and because of the open view, navigation and passaging is safe and enjoyable. White fiberglass walls trimmed in warm wood create a bright easy-to-clean interior.

Just aft of the steering station is a spacious dinette with a beautiful Carpathian Elm Burl table. Cushions come with both vinyl and washable decorator covers. White microsuede curtains keep the room bright and can be removed easily for washing.

The main cabin ceiling has cypress overhead veneer with fire maple trim. The cabin sole is a modern darkwood waterproof vinyl that is easy to clean and maintain and resists damage.

GALLEY

The Galley, located in the airy main cabin, has more than ample storage, a large refrigerator, and more galley space than some apartments.

The spacious blue mist fiberglass galley countertop echoes the sea and serves as cooking and serving area.

All 5 of the large galley cabinets (and all other cabinets) are constructed of light and strong composite panels and are well ventilated with stainless vents. The Galley even includes a swing-out trash bin.

VENTILATION

12 hatches, each with Ocean Aire® screen and shade, a large forward opening cockpit door, and 17 opening ports ensure a constant flow of air which is important in the tropics.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

Each hull has a fullsize double bed/berth for maximum privacy and a second cabin with single bed which can also be used as an office or workshop.

All beds have hatches directly overhead for maximum natural cooling. The dinette in the main cabin makes into a double bed, so that 8 people can sleep aboard comfortably. Additionally, the forward cockpit has two 6’+ long cushions for napping on watch, or just anytime.

Conscientiously/professionally cared for, lightly used, never chartered, and stored in fresh water. She comes fitted with many upgrades: solar water heater, genset, air conditioner, custom Bluewater Baby® center console tender with new outboard, coachroof water collection system, solar power, and much more.

Living off the grid

The Watercats 46ph is completely sustainable wihile living aboard at anchor using carefully thought out systems.

7 Solar panels charge the batteries (through two MPPT controllers), powering the large (8.5 cu ft) refrigerator/freezer. Another large ice chest/cool storage is adjacent to the galley.

The solar water heater heats water which is circulated with its own solar powered pump and then stored in the 6 gallon water tank. Supplemental electric heating is available if needed.

Water catchment and water purification ensure fresh water at all times. The cabintop water collector gathers rain water and feeds it into the two 80-gallon fresh water tanks. Insufficient rain is no problem as the 40 gallon per hour watermaker provides unlimited fresh water. Two cabins with full size double beds are forward under hatches insuring air flow and comfortable sleeping in the hottest climes.

The foam cored construction of the Watercats 46ph provides insulation to the interiors.

The aft single cabins have their own opening hatch, two opening ports, and a large fixed port at eye level.

Air conditioner unit has multiple zones to cool the area desired. One zone includes just the master sleeping cabin. This unit cooled the boat in Guatemala in the summertime!

29 hatches and opening ports insure air flow, and full custom canvas covers including side curtains keep the tropical sun off the deck as needed.

Electric davits mean that tender storage and access is easy and safe, especially important when anchoring out. The custom center console Bluewater Baby® is the ideal tender... beautiful, fast, stable, and comes with a brand new 20 hp outboard. (

Safety

Safety is paramount whether going for a daysail or circling the globe, and the Watercats 46ph doesn't disappoint.

FIRST THE PILOTHOUSE

All navigation and steering can be done from inside the boat with panoramic views from the cabin ports.

It is extremely rare to see a commercial boat without pilothouse protection for the helmsman. Instead of facing the elements to stand watch, on the Watercats 46ph the watchkeeper can sit in the comfortable reclining helm chair without being at the mercy of adverse natural elements. Sail trim can be observed through 4 large overhead hatches.

NEXT, THE FORWARD SAILING COCKPIT Here a second wheel offers the option of outdoor steering. All sail handling is done safely from inside the cockpit with an electric winch, and without the necessity of going out on deck. A foldable bimini top gives protection from the sun as desired. The forward cockpit is the favorite seating for guests underway and at anchor. The 6-foot-plus cockpit seats with layered EZDRI foam offer an inviting place to sleep. The Hood furling and self-tending jib makes for easy one-person tacks. The main and jib have custom made curved sheeting tracks to tweak the sails for best performance. Lazy jacks handle the main, and the boom is easy to reach from the cabin top. PROPULSION The Watercts 46ph has two diesel engines, each with its own separate fuel tank and starting battery, making it possible for the boat to operate on either one or two engines. Separate fuel tanks ensure that if one tank gets contaminated, the other is immediately available. Two rudders with hydraulic steering mean that one rudder can be isolated to steer the boat if damage to the other one occurs. There is also a manual tiller. ANCHOR SETUP So many sailboat designers approach anchoring as an afterthought, but not here. The owners spent years aboard their previous 44' multihull anchored out. That knowledge is reflected in the Watercats 46ph which is built and designed to be taken to remote places facing a wide variety of anchoring challenges. She has a wide stable platform with two anchors ready to deploy instantly. Anchors are retrieved with a remote-controlled electric windlass. When there is need to go on deck, the walkway is wide and flat, protected by lifelines, and the cabintop makes an excellent handhold.

Engines

Like any custom build, it takes years to complete.

Engines were purchased around 2008, but only put into service when vessel was launched in 2011.

Owner chose to custom fit two fiberglass 32 gallon diesel tanks in the center forward pod, affording a 300 mile range with both engines running.

However, two more rectangular tanks of 32 gallons or more can be dropped in the pod if desired for a longer range.

Aft Cockpit

Though smaller than the typical catamaran cockpit, it has fixed seating for 6 and room for 2 folding chairs for 8 people to socialize.

Ample passage room from Port to Starboard and easy access to the center console dinghy and davit operation.

Same level as the saloon, offering easy flow in and out.

Bottom Paint

Fresh bottom paint early February 2019.
