Wooden Ships Comments on this Whitby Coble

Whitby Coble built in 1964 by Clarksons Boatyard.

A typical east coast fishing boat design, used for centuries to fish in the coastal waters of the east coast. Usually launched and recovered from the beach, they are tough stable boats with bluff bows to ride the swells.

Bought by the present owner 18 months ago and not used since, the boat was refitted and the engine overhauled by the previous owner in 2020. She is sitting on a double axle road trailer which is in rough condition but appears sound.

Length 19’

Construction

Clinker planked in larch all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

A very flat bilge, the steamed timbers stretch from one gunwhale to the other across the centreline in a single piece of timber tying the hull together.

Double ended hull with heavy stem and stern post.

Three separate thwarts with heavy section supporting knees.

Plywood sole boards in sections.

Machinery

Lister single cylinder air cooled SR1 diesel engine, refurbished in 2020 with very few hours since.

Lister gearbox controlled with a lever, to a stainless shaft and fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.
