20 ton Hillyard ketch, Designer: David Hillyard, Builder: Hillyards, Year: 1965, Location Kent, Length on deck: 42', Beam: 11'7", Draft: 5'6", Tonnage(TM): 20TM, £67,000, REF: 10609, Full Specification, Wooden Ships Comments, At 20 Thames Tons this is one the larger boats in the Hillyard range yet she keeps the same design format of a centre cockpit, aft cabin, large saloon and further sleeping accommodation forward. Built in 1965 at Littlehampton. This was the fourth Hillyard for the original owner and he specified some significant improvements on the standard build including teak for the bright work instead of mahogany, perhaps the only post war Hillyard to have this, improved interior joinery and a taller rig for better performance. Given a major refit in present ownership including new rigging and sails, new engine, complete cosmetic refit and all new equipment. She is now an extremely smart and well found yacht, complete with everything required on a cruising yacht and ready to sail away. She has a superb sheltered cockpit, not as deep as most Hillyards but far more comfortable making her very safe at sea and a deck saloon with all round visibility and comfortable seating. The ketch rig is easily handled by a small crew and the addition of modern winches and roller furling head sails make life very easy at sea. There are so many features on this boat which make her the ideal cruising yacht which shows that David Hillyard was a very clever yacht designer who was forging ahead in the industry and laying down markers that would last for many years. Construction, Planked in mahogany all copper fastened to sawn oak frames with steamed intermediate oak timbers. Oak backbone and grown oak floors. External iron ballast keel. T&G pine decks overlaid with cascover sheathing. All varnished teak coamings, better quality than the average Hillyard. Rig, Bermudan ketch rig on hollow built spruce masts, re-glued in 2012. Stainless steel standing rigging new 2012. Harken roller furling headsail and Harken self tailing winchesat the mast and in the cockpit. New sails in 2012. Machinery, Beta marine 75hp diesel installed new in 2012. Centreline 3 blade propeller gives 8 knots cruising speed. All new batteries with twin alternators and 3.5kva inverter providing 240v. All new Plastic Vetus tanks. Accommodation, 6 good sized berths in 2 sleeping cabins. 6’1″ headroom throughout most of the boat. Large aft cabin with separate heads compartment and berths either side, Forward cabin with two single berths. Fore peak with single berth if required and stowage space. Large deck saloon with good all round visibility and large table. Galley with Taylors gas stove and plenty of storage cupboards. Guest heads compartment forward.
