This Fairey Huntsman 31 Aft Cockpit 2 berth classic sports cruiser was built in 1970 and is hull number 12.
With its flared bow, deep V hull and powerful diesels the FAIREY HUNTSMAN 31 is a magnificent sea boat and has a proven track record of victories in offshore races during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s However it is her sheer style and presence that enables her to stand out and she draws admiring glances wherever she goes.
”Floating Charge” has a fine array of navigation aids, a superb cabin and modern clean diesels. Being one of only four aft cockpit models in existence she is a most desirable craft.
She is powered by twin 212hp Ford Mermaid 5.95 litre 6 cylinder turbo diesels (1594 hours) that were fitted as an upgrade in 1990 and are regularly serviced.
We highly recommend early viewing of this boat.
Hull comprises of 7 x 1/8th” laminations of Agba Mahogany veneered glued, compressed and baked together. Super structure is marine ply, main deck is marine ply and cockpit floor is teak veneer on marine ply panels. Additional vaneer to bottom with linger engine bearers as per the racing hulls.
The cabin is entered through a central door and down 3 steps. From forward are two single berths in a u-configuration with stowage under. Outboard under the side decks are full length shelves with lockers in the aft corners. The front bulk head has an open centre section and behind this is a spacious storage area for bedding and clothing. Set in the cabin roof is a large ventilation hatch, night lights and air vents. The windows have been replaced and give an airy feel to the cabin and the floor has been replaced with a teak & holly sole. New curtains and berth cushions in 2015.
Aft on the port side is the L shaped galley with its two burner cooker, grill and oven, a stainless steal sink (with hot/ cold water) and drainer and refrigerator. (The gas system is currently disconnected) Set in the worktop is access to a deep food and crockery locker. At the forward end of the galley running inboard to a stainless steel grab rail are two shelves for glasses and condiments. On the after bulkhead is an access door to the back of the engine instruments and steering controls.
Immediately behind the starboard settee is a hanging clothes locker.
The toilet compartment is entered through a teak louver door and has a manual sea toilet mounted outboard on a plinth under the side deck. On the aft bulkhead is a wash basin with fresh water tap. The side windows open and there is a roof vent and night light. Set in the forward bulkhead are shelves for toiletries. The toilet, sink and hoses were all replaced in 2015.
Coming aft and into the cockpit the helm position is to port and comprises of a single bucket seat in front of a comprehensive array of engine instruments with the navigation aids grouped neatly around. Visibility is excellent through the curved windscreen and side screens. Two additional matching seats and alongside the helm seat and in the cockpit comings are lockers for general stowage. The seats are attached to the front of the engine box. Under the teak grating floor are batteries and the new water tank.
The powerful Ford Mermaid turbo diesels are located beneath the hinged lids of the engine box. Access for daily level checks and servicing is first class and new exhaust elbows and exhaust pipes have recently been fitted. The engines were removed during the winter of 2003/04 all the cooling system stripped, cleaned and re-assembled and both engines serviced and fully resprayed before being refitted. The bilges were also repainted at the same time. In 2015 the cooling system was cleaned, and one tube stack replaced. Injectors serviced in July 2019. Speed seal impeller covers were fitted in 2015.
The rear section of the open cockpit has recently been fitted with an impressive wrap around seating area. This unique modernisation has transformed the accommodation and appearance of the boat without compromising the classic character, the seats although fitted and secured are completely removal. They have a vast amount of storage below for fenders, warps, etc. There is also a double infil panel which also converts the seating area into a sunbathing area which can also be used as a double berth. The seating was fitted new in 2011 and completely transformed and made Floating Charge one of the most versatile and comfortable Huntsmans around.
The side decks are extremely wide and have a non-slip finish giving excellent grip wet or dry. The fore deck is spacious has a modern electric anchor winch fitted and is surrounded by the stainless pulpit rail. The mooring cleats and fairleads are the original FAIREY models and have recently been re chromed.
