DESCRIPTION

Main Salon
Walking into the salon from the sliding rear door to the cockpit, one enters a symmetrical lower lounge with cream leather L-shaped settees set to port and starboard with a large coffee table on the portside. Three large windows aside offer views out and these windows are fitted with manual wooden blinds for easy shade and shuttering. A pull out occasional berth is located beneath the starboard side lounge and a TV is found aft port side on an electric riser when not concealed within the cabinet. The cabin sole throughout the yacht is Teak and Holly and the whole interior of the yacht is finished in very high grade teak. In fact, it is reported that there is over 800kg of teak on board the GB59RP. The fit and finish on board MAXIA III today, some 17 years after launch, is a testament to the quality and longevity of the teak and the craftsmanship of Grand Banks.
Forward of the L-shaped lounges to both sides are concealed electrical switchpanels, flanked by double shelf bookshelves for those all important almanacs and cruising guides.
There are three steps that take us from the lower lounge level, up to the Galley and Dining area which is where the Raised Pilothouse would have been located; but not on this boat.

Note – all of the teak joinery and cabinetry on board MAXIA III was carefully designed and considered during build. Where some GB models of that era had more ‘detail and embellishment’ built in, the owner of 59/16 had the forethought to ensure that the finishing was kept simple and modern and so remains in excellent condition and retains its timelessness.

Galley / Dinette
With the Raised Pilothouse helm deleted during construction, this entire raised area is now given to the galley and dining which is perfect for on board living. Walking up the three steps from the lower lounge, we walk onto the expansive teak and holly soled floor with L-shaped galley units on port and starboard side. The portside is given to fridges, cooktop, sinks and an overhead crockery cabinets, whilst the starboard side has more open worktop space with more fridges, winecooler, icemaker, trash compactor and tea/coffee making facilities. As a whole, this is an amazing galley that offers maximum storage, worktop space and all with the superior views offered by the raised position.
Forward and offset to port, just below the windscreen, one finds a very comfortable U-shaped dinette table cable of seating up to eight guests. Just aft of the dinette, to port and starboard, are opening doors out to the sidedecks. This arrangement is unique and was perfectly executed by Grand Banks. This new ‘raised galley and dining area’ becomes the heart of the vessel and certainly lends itself to very comfortable onboard day to day living.
A circular staircase leads from the starboard side of the dinette, down to the accommodation deck and access to cabins. Being next to the opening door, this position also maximises fresh airflow to the lower deck and provides easy access to the cabins via the side decks, rather than having to walk through the saloon and galley.

VIP Cabin - Forward
Walking forward one finds the VIP stateroom in the bow which features an island double berth located on the centreline. Four opening hull ports and two overhead opening hatches provide plentiful natural light and cross ventilation. Hanging lockers are found to port and starboard, and storage drawers are built in beneath the bed.
The en-suite bathroom is well sized and set to the starboard side. This bathroom has a vacuflush head, single basin and a separate shower stall with plenty of space.

The smaller of the guest cabins can be found on the portside just forward of the master cabin. The access door being across from the base of the staircase. This stateroom has three single berths set athwartships with a single berth aft and twin bunk berths forward. Both benefit from opening ports for light and ventilation. There is good floorspace between the bunks and a single hanging locker also set between them. With excellent headroom and the classic timber craftsmanship, this does not feel like a small cabin and would happily cater to a wide range of uses or guests. The head and shower for this cabin is the day head located across the corridor.

Crew cabin
The crew cabin is positioned far aft, aft of the engine room and located beneath the cockpit on the main deck. The crew cabin can be accessed in two ways, via a deck hatch in the cockpit with ladder, or via the engine room itself through a watertight door.
Upper and lower berths are positioned to the portside and run fore and aft. A combined head and shower area are located aft of the crew bunks, through another door, and this benefits from the fact that the shower/head area has an opening hatch direct onto the transom/swim platform. This gives more than adequate fresh air into the crew cabin, and also ability to add natural light into this otherwise compact and ‘hidden’ area of the boat. Please note that the crew cabin is currently used for storage and so may require small changes in order to turn this back into a dedicated and comfortable crew space.

Crew cabin

Stepping on to the yacht from the dock is easy via the low transom which is a moulded section of the hull. There are three steps up to the cockpit and these are from both port and starboard side. Handrails are there to assist with boarding from the dock, and stainless steel fairleads keep the lines tidy and yachtlike.
On a standard Aleutian 59RP there is no swim platform and the tender would be lifted by the davit crane up to the flybridge aft. On MAXIA III the owner decided to keep the flybridge aft clear and so added a fixed teak grate platform onto the transom. As this is fixed and without hydraulics then is also maintenance free. The davit crane easily lifts the tender from the water onto this platform and large tender chocks remain in place ready to secure the tender.

The cockpit is a delightful place to sit with unobstructed views aft and to the sides. The forward facing settee, with storage below, is comfortable and also leaves the accesses, fairleads and cleats clear for crew. The settee faces a varnished teak table which is extendable in time for al-fresco dining. The cockpit floor is teak laid and the teak, although original, remains in superb condition with hardly any signs of wear, a testament to the ongoing maintenance this yacht has enjoyed.
One of the most remarkable, and important points about the cockpit is the fact that it is completely shaded and protected by the flybridge overhang above which extends the full length of the cockpit. This GRP overhang offers a high ceiling and contains all overhead lighting, but is also relatively slim and does not add bulk to the overall aesthetic of the vessel. A classic Grand Banks design trait that many modern builders find hard to get right.

A sliding door connects the cockpit and saloon with a storage cabinet to the starboard side of the door, and the staircase to the flybridge is located to port and is easy and safe to traverse.

Side decks
The side decks from cockpit to foredeck on the GB59RP and easily navigated and well protected. Walking from the aft, there are three steps at midships which bring you up to the RP deck level. These side decks then wrap around the main deck windscreen to form a wonderful Portuguese bridge, arguably the finest place from which to stand and admire the view during navigation. The Portuguese bridge, and the two side doors to the galley dinette, make for extremely easy movement around the yacht which high freeboard and bulwarks giving added protection. Towards the cockpit on the starboard side is the engine room access door, another great addition so that entry into the engine room is easy and without the need to lift any deck hatches.
The Portuguese bridge has a forward centreline door giving access to the foredeck. The foredeck area is flat and full beam with teak caprails and stainless grabrails around. Two moulded fordeck seats face forward and ample storage is found beneath whilst ventilation dorades feed fresh air to the heads below. This whole foredeck area can be covered with cushions turning this into a wonderfully large sunpad. Anchor handling is forward with the anchor rollers on a bowsprit, keeping chain and anchor away from the bow.

Side decks
The side decks from cockpit to foredeck on the GB59RP and easily navigated and well protected. Walking from the aft, there are three steps at midships which bring you up to the RP deck level. These side decks then wrap around the main deck windscreen to form a wonderful Portuguese bridge, arguably the finest place from which to stand and admire the view during navigation. Flybridge
The flybridge of MAXIA III is very impressive and perfectly suited to cruising enjoyment. As you enter the flybridge via the staircase from the cockpit, you enter into a covered space which is protected and enclosed on four sides with heavy duty clears. The GRP hardtop provides perfect cover and has overhead lighting and grabrails well placed. The helm is on the centreline of the yacht and there are two Pompanette helm chairs, centre and to starboard, for Captain and guest. The helm dash itself is moulded and protected from the elements and so all navigational electronics and switchgear remain in good condition. To the portside of the captains chair is a forward facing bench seat and two fore and aft bench seats are located to port and starboard and behind the helm. There are two fixed pedestal, teak grate drinks tables  in front of each seat. The flybridge floor is teak laid and this is a safe, comfortable and commanding position to be underway, or at anchor.

    With the forward end of the flybridge under the cover of the GRP hardtop, and enclosed on four sides, a stainless steel rail separates the forward from the aft section of the flybridge.  The space freed up by not storing the tender here, has allowed for a ‘sundeck’ with room for two sunloungers and a comfortable armchair for days when a little sun soaking is called for. This area is cool underfoot thanks to the nonskid paint finish and with good height stainless steel railings for security. Lifebuoys and watertoys are kept and stored in this area. To the starboard side, and kept sperate by a railing, is the davit crane. This 24VDC crane has a 450kg capability at its full extension of 2.8m.

  • It is worth noting that the design of the Grand Banks allows for additional width and overhang to the flybridge which also gives protection and cover to the main side decks on both sides. These covered sidedecks offer great protection and safety in all conditions and are particular to the trawler style of yacht. In comparison, many other yachts may feel exposed in these areas.
