Boat Overview

Mistral is a Francis Herreshoff schooner, measuring 69 feet on deck, design #73. She was built in 1938 by Britt Bros in Saugus, MA for Theodore W. Little. This yacht is known for being strong, comfortable, and fast, making it suitable for double-handed sailing. It has a fabulous provenance.

Historical Significance

During the war, Mistral was utilized by the USCG to patrol for U-boats. Post-war, she became the first training ship of the USCG to sail across the Atlantic under the command of a female captain for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Rebuild and Modifications

She underwent substantial rebuilding by the previous owner in Lunenberg and Martha’s Vineyard from 1996-2000 and again by Paulsen in Germany from 2006-2008, with no expense spared.

• The frames were strengthened with laminated mahogany ring frames.
• Replanked in 1 ¼” cedar with bronze fasteners.
• Additional three layers of tri-directional cold moulded ¼” mahogany set in epoxy.
• Sheathed underwater for further protection.
• The decks, deck fittings, timber spars, and most of the interior, including the tanks, were replaced.
• Re-rigged with a gaff-fore mail to the original sailplan.
• The Nanni 200hp auxiliary diesel was installed more recently and still has low hours.

Interior Features

The light and airy interior includes four cabins, three heads, and a spacious saloon, with excellent headroom throughout. It is finished in cherry and off-white enamel in the classic Herreshoff style.

Racing History

Mistral has competed in the Antigua Classic Yacht regattas in 2008, 2014, and 2023.
