This Hinckley Sou'wester 34 is a venerable reminder of the early days of the Henry Hinckley Co.., which remains an industry leader to this day. She is a classic in every respect, with seemingly all of her original features intact but enhanced by quite a few modern upgrades.

This Hinckley Sou'wester 34 is a venerable reminder of the early days of the Henry Hinckley Co.., which remains an industry leader to this day. She is a classic in every respect, with seemingly all of her original features intact but enhanced by quite a few modern upgrades. Some would say that she is in absolutely striking condition having benefited from the last 38 years on a freshwater lake and a loving owner. Her construction was best in class back in the day, but considered very traditional today, with cedar planks on oak frame construction with varnished mahogany cockpit and cabin trunk, teak deck and teak cockpit sole, Her mast is Sitka spruce, as are the main and club jib booms. The keel is cast iron and she's powered by a 30hp Universal Atomic Four engine. Accommodations: Wow...6'1" headroom. Sleeps four on cushions in excellent condition with extra fifth bunk. V berths forward with shelves port and starboard, hatch overhead, storage drawer and three bronze ports. Next aft on the port side, there is a manually operated head with holding tank, vanity with sink, linen locker and bronze porthole and solar vent. A port side hanging locker is opposite the head. Settee berths in the main cabin with a shelf outboard on port and starboard sides as well as a shelf above the hanging locker and above the port berth; (5) bronze portholes; centerline drop leaf table. The extra bunk is a convertible upper berth. Amenities include ceiling lights with fan; over-counter lighting; floor carpeting; storage boxes; cabin hatch screens and a solar vent in head. The galley is aft of the companionway step, has sink, shelves, ice chest, utensil drawers, storage cabinet and S/S trash container. Galley: - Stainless steel counter - Storage above and below with mahogany trim - Dish/cup and beverage storage - S/S sink and trash disposal - Pressure water system - S/S Icebox Deck: - Standard Danforth Anchor w/ 200 anchor rode - Dinghy - 200 anchor rode for Sea Anchor (stored in bow rode & chain locker) - Manual Windlass - Dodger (new) - Cockpit awning with plastic stiffeners - Bow pulpit, stanchions, lifelines and safety netting port and starboard - Swim ladder - Single searchlight - Life jackets - Cockpit mooring cover - Mooring pickup hook Navigation: - Horizon VHF, Masthead wind indicator, Portable horn, compass, tilt indicator Electrical: Interior lights include galley light, (2) in cabin ceiling light, (1) head light, (1) forward cabin light with receptacle for DC - TV or radio. Exterior lights; navigation/anchor/strobe on masthead, bow running, stern running and (2) deck floodlights on the spreader. - 12 volt DC system - Battery parallel switch - Solar battery charger - Needs Batteries Mechanical and Engine: Reliable Universal Atomic Four gas engine w/recent upgrades of alternator, fuel pump, coil; points, condenser and carburetor - Bilge blower - Automatic bilge pump - Engine fuel shut-off valve - Automatic Halon fire ext. in engine compartment Sails and Rigging: Fractional Marconi rig sloop with spreaders and jumper struts - Mainsail with sail bag and cover - Working jib with sail bag and cover - 158% Genoa with sail bag - Spinnaker with turtle - Small storm jib (old) - Club working footed jib boom - Sitka spruce mast, varnished - Sitka spruce boom, varnished - Jib halyards led aft to cockpit - Spinnaker pole - (4) winches, 2 fixed halyard turning blocks and 2 on slide tracks Construction: Cedar plank on white oak frame; 4500# cast iron keel w/ new keel bolts in 2000); teak deck; teak cockpit sole. Mahogany gunwale, toe rail, cabin trunk, bulkhead and cockpit seats. Tiller steering. The 42 mast and 16 boom are varnished Sitka spruce, mast steps to cabin top. New keel bolts 2000. She is USCG Documented and listed in "The Directory of Wooden Boats". Sellers Comment: "The Classic Yacht, Grande Dame, spent her last summer on Lake Champlain in 2012. The Winter of 2012/2013 was the first Winter on the hard. She has been kept on a steel cradle on the gravel ground at Shelburne Shipyard, VT under a 40' x 30' white tarp supported by a wood frame to allow for walking and working under the tarp. This classic vessel has been priced well below its $ 30,000+ estimated value because the owner recommends having 60% of the below water line hull refastened with silicone bronze screw and the entire below water hull seams re-caulked. This may also be an insurance requirement when insuring this vessel. The owners are no longer capable of doing this work so this work was estimated to cost around $ 10,000 to have it done by professionals ( hence the low asking price) . Cosmetically, a section of the mahogany deck toeboard and a section of gunwale on the port side needs replacement. The mahogany cabin trunk varnish should be stripped of varnish, sanded and restored with varnish or paint. The cockpit, cabin bulkhead and companionway, hatches and trim are all varnished in good shape, as are the mast and booms. The 30 HP Atomic 4 engine was running very well the Summer of 2012, was properly winterized, but has not been started up since, however, the owner does not believe there will be problems when ready to commission for use. Any serious buyer should arrange with the owner for an inspection to ascertain conditions on their own and do their own work and cost assessment prior to purchasing. This vessel has been well cared for on Lake Champlain, VT since 1982/83 when the owner took a year to do a thorough restoration before launching in July 1983. This is not a fiberglass vessel. The Henry Hinckley Co. built wooden sloops of the highest quality materials and workmanship. This particular vessel was originally purchased in 1950 from Henry who was commissioning the vessel for his own use according to the original owner, Reverend William Hale.
