Construction and History
Bright Morning was designed by Kim Holman. She was built by Tucker Brown yacht Builders in Burnham on Crouch in 1962. Painted white mahogany carvel planking on steamed oak timbers. Copper fastenings. Long keel with a bolt on lead ballast. Keel hung rudder. Blue plywood decks. Varnished coach roof. Teak grabrails.
Considerable works commensurate with a boat of this age were undertaken by previous ownersincluding: New welsh rock elm floors amidships replacing original galvanised steel straps, also beneath pillars supporting deck-mounted mast step integrated into bulkheads. Some new steamed oak timbers and fastenings forward of the mast starboard side and new hanging knees and repairs to deck beam and deck immediately aft of forehatch. New stainless steel keel bolts. New drive shaft, propeller and deep sea gland, new seacocks.
Bright Morning was commission by Richard Bird as a 21st birthday present for his son John. The boat remained in John's ownership for 45 years and has only had two other owners since. Throughout the period the boat was in John Bird's ownership it was kept under cover every winter and has since been fully covered during the winter under the current ownership, consequently it is in very good structural condition for a wooden vessel of this age.
