Description

One of only 19 boats of its type designed by Kim Holman “Westerling” offers a chance to own a slice of classic yachting history. She has been lovingly cared for and maintained by her current owners and now needs an enthusiastic new owner to look after her for many years to come.

Owners comments:

Designed by Kim Holman (well known for many excellent designs including the Twister) it is said that he never designed anything other than a pretty boat and Westering stands testament to that. Kim’s brother built her in his yard, Uppams, at Brixham in 1961 for, no less than, Rear Admiral Hubert Harrison CBE DSC. Sadly, we believe he passed away just a year later, and Westerling found a new owner who kept her until 1970. With just 6 owners in her 60 year life she has clearly been well loved and has an interesting history.

in 1981 she was lucky enough to be sold to an adventurous man who sailed her to the Mediterranean, where she has lived since, crossing Biscay for what was the first time in her life to cruise around Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece and Turkey. She subsequently sailed back and forth across Biscay at least 4 more times whenever he had a desire to revisit the UK - racking up over 60,000 nautical miles in his ownership.

His job as lead engineer for one of the very first charter yacht operations in the 80s led to Westerling’s daily workout escorting those lucky holiday sailers around the Greek Ionian islands. We are sure she could tell many exciting stories from these times but ours began in 2011 when we moved to the Ionian and fell in love with this pretty looking boat which had just become a bit neglected.

Westerling opened a new chapter of our lives and one which I thought I would forever be a part, but a new project beckons and we feel that after exactly 10 years of ownership this 60 year old boat needs passing on to someone else to continue to have the fun. It’s true it would suit a practical person but we have always felt that she is not a showpiece but there to be used as she has been her whole life.

Having sat for too long in a Greek boatyard we set out making her structurally sound. We made and laminated 28 new oak ribs, recaulked alot of her hull, remade the transom, removed all of the cabin and decks and replaced the cabin deck beams, replaced all of the roof and deck and epoxy sealed the lot.

In subsequent years we replaced the keel bolts, engine, running and standing rigging, water tank, rudder, tiller, fuel tank, rechromed the port holes, renewed the upholstery, sail and boom cover and fitted an electric windlass. Much time has been spent refastening her pitch pine planks which are all original with the correct silicon bronze screws.

We had a new mainsail and no.2 jib made by Arun Sails, bought a good used No.1 and have a cruising chute. All of which helped us turn many heads when Westerling started picking up wins in the local sailing events we entered in the Ionian. At 5 tons she is not light, she has a 2 ton keel, but with such excellent design she surprises many modern boat owners.

We believe she is one of the most original Sterling 28s still existent with Kim Holman's trade mark folding table, her bronze Lewmar winches and wooden boom. She featured in Practical Boat Owner in 1996 in the article on Med Sailing and we still continue the tradition of that picture by using a cream coloured umbrella in the cockpit to shade from the Greek sun.
