- Stock #One of a kind electric runabout commissioned from sailboat builder Mark Johannesen! This boat was custom-built for the current owner in 2019 (delivered in early 2020) by Mark Johannsen of Johannsen Boat Works in Vero Beach (of Trinka and Raider sailboat fame), starting with the last Raider 16 hull to be molded (#159) as Mark was going out of the sailboat business.
One of a kind electric runabout commissioned from sailboat builder Mark Johannesen! Customization--with advice from the original designer John Drawe--centered on omitting centerboard and centerboard housing, mast and all sailing rig/gear while strengthening the hull at the stern to carry the custom extra wide motor mount for the electric motors. The overhanging "gull wings" of the sailboat design made the original Raider sailboat essentially untippable in any wind. On this powerboat they remain to add elegance and an unmistakable presence--especially with a long "snoot" projecting forward to glide over the waves rather then through them--and so quietly with electric instead of gas power! This boat is in storage available for showings January 2024 The name NESSIE, of course, refers to the famous Loch Ness monster in Loch Ness in Scotland. (Owner thought of calling the boat DARTH RAIDER but had been to Scotland recently and hence opted for the Scottish reference instead of "Star Wars". But the boat still looks a little like Hans Solo's Millenium Falcon, owner thinks!) Designed primarily for one operator/pilot sitting on the port side at the stern, there is space for a second passenger facing across--and possibly someone light forward, but the high-tech sailboat design makes moving around by anyone once underway problematic. And the boat is best, and most fun, for one regardless. Equipped with three high tech German 3hp Torqueedo Travel 1003C electric outboard motors, this charmer tops out at 11-12 kmph (kilometers an hour) if run flat out (which will run the batteries down in 50-60 minutes) but can cruise for up to 2:30 hours at 7-8 kmph if power draw is held down accordingly. (Extra batteries could be purchased from Torqeedo or West Marine to double the time range. However, this is not recommended because changing batteries on the water while possible is somewhat awkward and difficult.) The two outside motors are controlled by dual throttle lever-type controls mounted together on a freestanding (but tethered) center control console at the stern (oriented for control by a pilot sitting on the port side), bypassing the electronic controls in the tillers for those motors, while the tillers of those outside motors are linked together to allow steering with one (right) hand. Throttle control of the center motor remains in the electronic control in its tiller--which can also be used for steering when only one motor is being used for docking, etc. while that motor mostly serves to add power straight ahead since steering with the two outside motors is usually all that is needed. The liquid crystal display board for each motor provides readouts for (a) current power drawdown in kw; (b) current speed in kmph (kilometers per hour--by satellite to reflect tidal currents or wind whether against you or helping); (c) theoretical range remaining in battery based on current kmph speed; and (d) % of battery capacity remaining for use. Bare boat weight is some 200 pounds but overall weight is not known---maybeincluding water ballast forward and starboard to make use without a sail feasible). Cockpit is self-bailing from rain and washing water when at rest on trailer or at dock while boat is equipped with large (tethered) plugs to block the sailboat-type self-bailing holes at stern while underway to prevent backflow of water into the cockpit in the absence of a mast/sail forward pushing the bow down and hence stern up in operation. Water coming onboard during operation thus cannot drain out but experience has been that this simply doesn't happen in normal operation; the boat glides over waves rather than plowing through them. It includes a mushroom type anchor/full line and an augur type anchor for sand flats. Bright red ablative anti-fouling paint was added in February of 2022 to allow keeping it in the water indefinitely if desired and permitted. Adds to the look as well, of course! The boat has been in inside storage for nine months each year since delivery in early 2020. Usage only intermittent in the other three. In short, this boat is a terrific day cruiser for around a quiet lake or other confined waters, but it also can take waves very nicely (by gliding over them--remember that long snoot!) if the wind arises! And it is absolutely the only one like it in the world! Rather like sailing without having to deal with sails or tack! Even the sound of hull smacking on water as you glide along! (Just not a high-performance hydroplane despite its appearance.) If you want a boat that will be the center of attention among your friends and anyone at the launch ramp, this one is it!
