Two Westerbeke generators (18 Kw and 8.5 Kw) keep all of the onboard systems running. Design Brief

Yacht designed for world cruising + charter in the Indian Ocean Seychelles. Custom built under supervision of a surveyor. Custom built for owner specifications and requirements, not built to be put on the market. This implies a strength and reliability imperative (notably structural bulkheads). Yacht designed to be maneuvered and managed by a couple. Yacht is ideal for a liveaboard couple and for charter (12 passengers + 3-4 crew). The boat possesses a dedicated maneuver cockpit where all sheets are grouped together (except halyards). The trimaran hull shape is very sea-kindly as it eliminates or attenuates the impact of choppy seas or large waves under the bridge-deck. It allows a much calmer passage against a heavy sea state. Designed for cruising in tropical waters: excellent natural ventilation without air conditioning originally (air con later installed to meet the marketing demands of charter). Outstanding sun protection with two hardtops. Simplicity and reliability of equipment. Oversized mast, rigging and hardware. Unsinkable yacht. Fixed keels for voluntary beaching (boatyards) or involuntary grounding to protect the hulls. 10 cm thickness of fiberglass at sole of each hull. All areas of the yacht are accessible and can be dismantled. Interior furniture can be dismantled and electrical and plumbing is accessible. La Rochelle being, with Brittany, one of the major centers of multihull construction in France. Construction: Built on female molds. Isopthalic polyester resin sandwich over PVC Airex foam. Reinforced in critical areas with unidirectional (UD) fiberglass and epoxy. Structural bulkheads reinforced with marine ply and glassed 30mm/UD. Deck is polyester sandwich.

The center hull is built in vinylester/airex foam 30 mm/density 80 Kg/m3 sandwich. The center hull keel is 7 m long and serves to stabilize the yacht when hauled. This keel facilitates hauls by marine railway systems that can be found in numerous places around the world. This avoids the use of the travelift which exerts enormous pressure on a multihull. The keel has a 10 cm sole of solid glass for beaching. Important design feature: TEUG deck – this design developed by Michel Joubert gives the boat numerous advantages:

• Significantly larger interior volume. Engine rooms under the floorboards. Large storage areas. Storage along the entire length of the boat.
• Fuel and water tanks centered. Reduces hobby horsing.
• Several watertight compartments make the boat unsinkable.
• Ability to position all heads (domestic sized heads) above the waterline draining into holding tanks, accepting toilet paper. A feature that is very appreciated by clients.
• Deck plan that is clear of clutter and facilitates clean running of lines.

Accommodations

Salon with dining table for 8 pax + TV + chart table. Very large galley 5m long, Gaudin 4 burner stove and professional oven; extractor; ample storage. 6 double cabins with ensuite bathrooms. Master cabin is equipped with TV. 2 crew cabins including one with double bed and bathroom. 1 workshop including water filter, vice, lathe. 1 sail locker. 3 engine bays each equipped with automatic fire extinguisher.

Interior/Galley Equipment

Lighting: all LED for minimal power consumption. 1 x 350 L freezer: includes two independent cooling systems:

• Two cold plates running off of 2000W/220V compressor + 1 back-up 2000W compressor.
• Two cold plates running off of 1000W/220V compressor.

1 refrigerator 400 L with two independent cooling systems:

• One cold plate running off 2000W/220V compressor.
• Two cold plates running off 600W/220V by generator or inverter.

The single 2000W compressor is sufficient for the freezer and refrigerator: 1 hour of generator time per day is sufficient to cover all refrigeration needs (stop gen at -22C). Air conditioning: Twin systems CLD Webasto/cold water chiller. 2 twin compressors (1 compressor suffices to run the whole boat). The 7 cabins are equipped with 12000 BTU compressors each, master has 16000 BTU compressor. Air conditioning is lightly used as the boat is very well ventilated.

Fuel & Water

Fuel tanks (3): 3000 L + 1000 L + 1000 L for 3500 miles of range. Water tanks (5): 2 x 1500 L; 2x 1000 L; 200 L. Hot water: 150 L heated via electrical resistance or via engine.

Electricity And Power Generation

Electrical systems on board: 220V, 24V, 12V. 1 x 16Kw Westerbeke, 220V single phase. 1 x 8.5 kw Westerbeke, 220V single phase. Chargers: 220V/24V: 1 x 100 a/h; 1 x 80 a/h; 1 50 a/h. Charger/inverter: 1 x 60 a/h. Inverter 24V/220V: 2 x 2000 W. Surge protectors: one voltage regulator for 24V and one for 12V. Lightning protection: rod and grounding via shroud. House batteries: tubular technology batteries/cycles 12 elements x 2V/ total 24V, model HVT7.

Exterior Equipment

Windlass: 2000 W, chain 14mm/140 m and anchor are accessible from the deck. The windlass has two chainwheels and one drum for the mainsail halyard or various uses including the docklines etc. Anchors x 3: 1 stainless steel Spade, 85 kg; 2 FOB 60 and 45 kg. Davits: electric 24V for the 4.20 m dinghy/70 HP Yamaha outboard. Dive compressors: 2 Bauer Utilus 10 and 5 dive bottles. Dinghy: RIB 4.20 m Joker with 70 HP Yamaha outboard engine. Ventilation: From the outset, the yacht was built for use in the tropics. It is purposefully well ventilated via a multitude of deck and topside hatches 34 in total. Special attention was provided to the cabins. The hatches are oriented to capture air and deflect it towards the interior of the boat. Ventilation is optimized by the large hatch in the salon (3m2) which opens to an angle of 100 degrees off the plane of the deck. This large panel also allows the removal of the main engine under the floorboards of the salon. Specific to CONAN: all the fixed plexiglass windows have been removed and replaced with composite and opening hatches which makes for a cool yacht in the summer. Rainwater catchment: the coach roof has a teak fiddle around its circumference to collect rainwater with a valve that allows feeding to the reservoir or sending overboard. Steering: mechanical with Goiot parts: chain + cables/ 3 rudders. Simple and reliable. No issues. Prop shafts: 3 straight shafts. The two shafts associated with the Perkins engines in the amas can be removed underwater just as the cutlass bearings (40 mm, 1 per shaft). All shafts are installed with shaft seals by Ercem/Maucour France. Paint systems for hull and rig: mast and hulls are painted in Sicomin alkyl-urethane (same as All-Grip). The advantage of Sicomin is that it can be polished. Good for 15 years. Yacht painted in 1995, 2003, coats. Anti-osmosis treatment: the amas have a reinforced anti-osmosis barrier consisting of 2 layers of 600 gram fiberglass and Sicomin epoxy treatment. The center hull is vinylester and has a Sicomin epoxy treatment for added security.

Sails And Rigging

Mast: Marechal aluminum over-specified for a multihull, inertia 15.5 kg/m, length 20 meters, repainted in 2021. Standing rigging: Soromap, replaced in 2010. Double self-supporting and over-specified. Mainsail: 100 m2. Solent: 55 m2. Genoa: 80 m2 (2010). Gennaker: 110 m2 (2010). The three headsails listed above are always in place on Profurl P52 furlers to facilitate sail changes. Possible to make larger sails via a lengthening of the boom. 2 asymmetric spinnakers. 1 heavy symmetric spinnaker for deep sailing angles.

Sailing History

Launched September 1988. Depart La Rochelle December 1988. Arrive Seychelles in January 1989 in 4 stages including a stop in Red Sea. Depart Seychelles February 1989 – 2 crew. Arrive Turkey April 1989 after Force 10 storm. 1989 to 2000: charters in Mediterranean in summer and charter in Red Sea (Egypt) in the winter. The trimaran sails year round between Italy and Turkey since 2014 and is very recognizable and appreciated by clients and the crew alike.
