Laurent Giles Normandy class sloop, Designer: Laurent Giles, Builder: Coombes, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, Year: 1964, Location Chichester, UK, Length on deck: 28, Beam: 8'1, Draft: 4'6, Tonnage(TM): 4.8 Disp. £7,950, REF: 5510, Full Specification, Laurent Giles Normandy class design, built by Coombes of Bembridge, Isle of Wight in 1964. The Normandy was a popular design in it’s day, a successor and larger sister to the most famous small yacht of all time, the Vertue. The Normandy offered safe and reliable sailing for 4 crew in a very manageable size of yacht with a respectable turn of speed and very acceptable windward performance. Judging by the yard and the materials used in the construction, this was not a cut price yacht in her day but a quality build that cost someone a deal of money. She has survived the years remarkably well but she has not been commissioned for the last 2 years and now needs a new owner with some time, energy and a little knowledge to get her back on the water. She had a refit in 2007 when reportedly £14,000 was spent on the yacht! A 2013 survey report is very detailed and will make a good program on which to carry out the refit, most of which is servicing and cosmetics. Length on deck 28’, Lwl 22’6”, Beam 8’1”, Draft 4’6”, Tonnage 4.8 tons displacement, Construction. Planked in teak below the wl, mahogany above all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers on an oak back-bone. External lead ballast keel. The survey report states keel bolts believed to have been checked in the 2007 refit. Oak floors. Deck. Marine ply, painted. Varnished mahogany toe rails. Coach-roof raised to a dog-house aft gives protection to the cock-pit and increases the space in the cabin. Varnished mahogany coamings, sheathed marine ply deck. S/S pulpit & pushpit, Fractional bermudian sloop rig on varnished spruce mast stepped on deck. Single spreaders with jumper struts above. Genoa on Rotostay, Mainsail with roller boom reefing, Pair of Lewmar single speed sheet winches on the cock-pit coamings, Pair of halyard winches on the mast. Stainless steel standing rigging to internal galvanised steel chain plates. Engine. Yanmar 2 cylinder 15hp diesel, single Morse control, Twin fuel tanks in the cock-pit lockers, Conventional shaft drive to 3 blade centre-line prop fitted with Ambassador rope cutter. 2 x 12v batteries, Accommodation. 4 berths. Fore cabin with V-berths. Standing head-room under the fore hatch on the forward end of the coach-roof. Varnished mahogany slats to the ship’s sides. Bulkhead doorway aft to stbd heads compartment with Blake sea toilet. Locker to port. These structural bulkheads provide the support for the mast compression. Bulkhead doorway to saloon cabin. Port and stbd settee berths. Galley in after port corner, chart desk in after stbd corner. Engine box between. Steps on the engine box up to the bridge deck and cock-pit. 7’ head-room under the dog-house. 5’10” under the coach-roof a little less in the fore cabin. All original mahogany joinery.
