DESCRIPTION

This is Awesome. And truly she is. Everybody says so. Every time we dock or someone kayaks between her hulls we hear them exclaim it . . . Awesome!. . . and then they see the name on the transom. After 8 years of ownership, thousands of sea miles, and 5 years of living aboard I have to agree! Awesome is a Malcolm Tennant designed canoe-stern power catamaran designed to cross oceans with aplomb. She was built in New Zealand, crossed through Panama to Florida on her own bottom, and explored the Caribbean and East coasts of North and South America. Then she went back through Panama and up the West Coast to Washington State for a substantial refit. After refitting, she has been a wonderful liveaboard home and Northwest exploration vehicle for all of Puget Sound, the Inside Passage, and SE Alaska. She is truly a world cruising catamaran and an excellent liveaboard - especially for families with children. Awesome is of foam core, epoxy, fiberglass, and Kevlar composite construction. She is powered by twin Yanmar 420 hp engines that propel her at an economical 17 knot fast cruise, a very economical 9 knot loping cruise, and a top speed of 23 knots. Awesome is sleek and stable. She will run over a 4' chop at 17 knots like it isn't even there. She can cruise Seattle to Ketchikan in 3 days running only daylight hours. She can return to Seattle on the same tank of fuel (she carries 2000 gallons). Perhaps you've seen her go by - offering twice the space, twice the speed, and burning half the fuel of other comparable power boats. Awesome has a completely protected panoramic flybridge helm with space for a dozen people (and a flybridge convertible bunk for lazy Summer evenings). She has an expansive aft deck that can seat another dozen or be actively sport fished. She has an interior helm inside her huge saloon with a gourmet galley. And she is an owner's version to starboard (there is even a tub down in the owner's head) with two additional guest cabins to port. Awesome has been substantially refit including professional paint renewal from keels to RADAR arch with durable Awlgrip two-part polyurethane. She has had many systems refit and renewed in the past 8 years (see the extensive list in her specifications). My family is ready to return to a sailing cat now that my daughter (who grew up onboard) is old enough to be lashed to the mast. Since this is a broker-owned boat, partial trades will be considered (especially performance sailing catamarans). Awesome enjoys much sought after urban end-tie moorage in two Puget Sound locations and either slip may transfer. Either slip could also be liveaboard again. This is an Awesome situation for an Awesome cruising couple or family. She is much less costly than a home on land in the Northwest and she can be your home in the Northwest or anywhere in the world. And Awesome is already named after your wife! What are you waiting for?

Awesome Specifications & Equipment

Hull Refit
In 2016 Awesome was hauled and put indoors for a complete exterior refit. She was stripped and faired from stem to stern and from keel to RADAR arch. She was given a professional Awlgrip sprayed paint job that is still in very good condition. Her bottom was given an epoxy barrier coat and new military grade hard ablative bottom paint. Her flybridge was completely enclosed and expanded. Her instrumentation was upgraded, she was fitted with fresh exterior upholstery and she was made ready for an Alaskan Adventure and a liveaboard cruising lifestyle. The upgrades have continued ever since.

Hulls
Awesome has stepped canoe-sterned hulls that are very easily driven. Her two 420 HP engines directly drive bronze 4-blade props (she comes with a spare set of 4-blades and a spare set of 3-blades too) which are completely protected by mini keels and skegs. Her lower hulls taper like a canoe just in front of her props kissing the sea goodbye. She lopes at up to 9 knots in displacement mode. As she accelerates past 14 knots she ‘stands up’ on her hull step and goes into semi-displacement mode. Here she traverses the water easily and efficiently at 14-18 knots with a top speed of 23. Fuel burn is approximately 1.25 gallons per nautical mile at 17 knots and approximately .5 gallons per nautical mile at 9 knots. Her bows are Kevlar reinforced and have a great reserve buoyancy forward and excellent water access aft. She has two sets of Kevlar reinforced forward bulkheads as well as watertight compartments beneath the forward stateroom/head. Her chain lockers are deep and generous with storage for substantial scope and fenders. Accommodations are amidship followed by watertight bulkheads, engine rooms, filtration & mechanical rooms, and finally transom lazarette/rudder spaces (each bulkheaded). Hulls are served by no less than a dozen electric bilge pumps for each individual space and two manual Whale gushers.

Flybridge
Awesome’s Flybridge is completely enclosed by a weather and wind proof Stamoid & Polycarbonate bimini (2016). The view is 360 degrees and all 4 corners of the boat are easily seen for maneuvers. The flybridge has wrap-around seating for 12, a Taco adjustable helm seat (2018), all navigation instrumentation (2016), a convertible king-sized day bunk, and solid aft deck lounge/play space behind the helm.

Aft Deck
Awesome is easily boarded via sweeping aft transom steps or via mid-hull deployable aluminum boarding ladders. She offers fantastic bridgedeck clearance and a 25′ wide aft deck joining slender and easily driven canoe-sterned hulls. Her aft settee was designed for sport fishing and can seat up to 12 with storage beneath. Several rod holders are built in, as well as a manual downrigger, fish cleaning station, baitwell/wet/dry-storage, bbq, a walk-in tool room, washer/dryer, electrical locker housing the 3000 watt inverter/charger (2021) and two additional Victron 100 amp chargers (2021), icemaker, exterior sink, and a huge top-loading refrigerator/freezer. The inner portion of the aft deck nearest the saloon slider is completely sheltered by the aft flybridge deck for shade and shelter. A 35 lb Bruce stern anchor lives on the rail with 25′ of 1/4″ chain and 200′ of nylon rode.

Foredeck
The foredeck is accessed by midship stairs and wide walkways on each side of the saloon. Just forward of the saloon are two huge storage lockers for fenders, lines, and toys. The dinghy (a 2021 True Kit 12′ landing craft inflatable powered by a Torqeedo electric drive) lives on the expansive fore deck next to its deployment davit. The entire fore deck is enclosed by stout stainless steel railing with netting and Dyneema footlines to keep crew, children, and pets securely aboard. Forward on the port bow is a chain and fender locker served by a Maxwell 3500 windlass carrying 150′ of 1/2″ chain backed by 200′ of 12-strand rode. The port anchor is a 154 lb Rocna (2016). This is the oh shit anchor. The working anchor is an 88 lb Rocna (2015) on the starboard side. It is served by a Maxwell 2500 windlass carrying 300′ of 3/8″ chain backed by 300′ of nylon rode. Both a light and a heavy anchor bridle are provided as are sturdy inner bow cleats. Both windlasses can be controlled by foot pads at the windlasses, or by switches at both helms. Both windlass switch/solenoid controllers were replaced with new in 2021. There is also an approximately 90 lb Danforth ‘hurricane’ anchor affixed to the starboard chain locker bulkhead. Several small Lewmar deck hatches and two large Lewmar deck hatches provide access and ventilation to the hulls below. The cannister liferaft also resides on the foredeck (requires recertification).

Saloon
Accessed by a mid-ship sliding door, the Saloon is huge. It has a galley to port with built-in 4-burner electric cooktop with overhead ventilation fan, an auxilary 2-burner induction cooktop that runs off of the inverter (2021), a two-drawer Isotherm refrigerator freezer (2018), a dual basin stainless sink with hot and cold pressurized water. There is abundant storage under the marble countertops of both the wrap-around galley counter and its matching island – including a bespoke liquor cabinet and electronics cabinet (stereo – with surround speakers and subwoofers throughout the saloon and aft deck). The interior helm is on the centerline forward. There are two complete sets of navigation instrumentation on Awesome – an older dual-display Furuno system with charts for the East Coast of North and South America connected to a Furuno 48-mile open-array RADAR plus depth sounder and a 2016 Lowrance HDS system with West Coast charts from Mexico to SE Alaska connected to a broadband 4G RADAR and side-scan sonar/fishfinder/depth sounder. To starboard in the saloon is an adjustable dinette/coffee table and wrap-around couch (in need of recovering soon). Beneath the couch is the 600 amp hour Battleborne lithium (LiFePo) house bank (2021) as well as additional storage. Saloon flooring is cherry and the ceiling is grey vinyl tiles with a central mirror over the island.

Owner’s Hull
The owner’s hull has a queen-sized spring mattress bed aft with a dressing table. Amidships is a full-sized desk and overhead cabinet that is just begging to be made into something else in this day and age. Forward of that is a double closet with sliding mirrored doors. Next is the fresh-water flushed vacu-flush head and then a full vanity with sink and finally a full-sized owner’s shower with a shower tub (great for kids). Both hulls are heated by twin forced-air Wallas diesel-fired heaters that keep the entire boat toasty with ease even on the coldest days. Each hull has its own dedicated air conditioner as does the central saloon.

Guest Hull
Aft to port is a private guest suite with a queen-sized mattress and closet. Amidships is the guest head with another fresh-water flushed vacu-flush head, vanity and shower. Forward is a cabin with deep storage beneath the large v-berth and an additional adjacent couch/guest bunk. All interior spaces are illuminated by LED lighting and enjoy diesel fired heat and air conditioning.

Engine Rooms (& complete spare engine!)
Both engine rooms have 1997 Yanmar 6CX-ETE 420 hp engines directly driving absolutely level 2 1/2″ shafts for zero loss of propulsive power due to declination. Engines were replaced under warranty by Yanmar in 1997 (after Yanmar specified the wrong coolant) and so have approximately 3500 hours each (original meters were retained and do not match actual hours). In 2019 a complete 3000 hour service was done on both engines including rebuild of both turbos, rebuild of both injector pumps, and injectors. A complete spare engine with only 600 reported hours (minus the block) also comes with Awesome. It is in my basement and gives a spare for everything. In addition to this spare engine and its turbo, alternator, starter, etc., there is an additional spare starter and two spare alternators, 2 spare sets of props, and extensive engine and systems spares. The starboard engine room contains the compressor for the top-loading refrigerator/freezer above. The starboard engine is fitted with a 200 amp alternator (2021) for rapidly charging the lithium house battery bank underway. Both engine rooms contain compressors that serve the pneumatic engine control system (renewed 2022). There is also a spare compressor. Both engine rooms also contain the bulkhead mounted Wallas diesel heaters. The port engine room houses part of the watermaker (panel, filter, membranes) and its alternator charges both engine start batteries with crossovers available.

Mechanical/Filter Rooms
Astern of each engine room is a mechanical/filter room housing dual racor fuel filters for each engine as well as a third racor fuel polishing filter and pump (Reverso). Awesome carries 2000 gallons in 4 tanks – two 700 gallon tanks aft in each hull and two 300 gallon tanks amidship in each hull. The port mechanical space also houses the 12.5 kw Phasor generator with approximately 4900 hours and the high pressure watermaker pump. The starboard mechanical room is used for some storage and also has electrical hookups for a former 220 volt dive compressor that is no longer installed.

Rudder Lazarettes
Furthest aft and accessed via Freeman watertight hatches are the rudder posts. Awesome has hydraulic steering from both helms as well as hydraulic autopilot. The lower portions of the hydraulic steering hoses were renewed in 2020. Lazarettes are partially bulkheaded from the Mechanical/Filter rooms allowing Awesome to back into a seaway when sportfishing.
