Malibu Boats is one of the world’s premier wakesurfing and waterskiing brands, with one third of the total market share. It focuses its innovation and development on creating ever-more advanced and highly specific watersports boats that create the optimum wake for wakesurfing, both for recreational use and tournament-level.
The brand was founded in 1981 and has been a leader in development throughout the following decades. It patented the first Wakeboard Hull, the Wedge Hydrofoil followed by the Power Wedge II, and its pioneering Surf Gate™ which, when it was introduced in 2012, changed the face of watersports by creating an endless, controllable surf wave.
The American brand now has manufacturing facilities across the world, in California, Tennessee, and Australia, and employs over 700 employees.
The introduction of the Surf Gate changed the course of the history of this already-successful brand, catapulting it forward as an industry pioneer. The system allows for changing the surf wake at the press of a button, without moving any weight on the boat, something that previously hadn’t been achieved. It resulted in a smoother ride for those onboard, as well as a better wake for those riding it. Malibu also puts huge emphasis on its state-of-the-art towing towers, which can be raised and lowered in just 9 seconds.
While Malibu Boats are world class towboats and used for professional-level tournaments, the brand also offers fun-for-the-whole-family models in a compact and easy-to-trailer package. They are undoubtedly luxurious boats, offered in edgy colors and with all the gear you could ever want on a watersports boat, but they also focus on plenty of comfortable seating for large groups, safety features, and lots of all-important storage.
Malibu’s current line-up consists of five series. The M-Series is quintessential Malibu, with its M242 and M220 offering all the features, performance, and luxurious amenities you’d expect from the brand. They are compact, luxury wakeboats with impressively high performance and attention to detail, including extra seating for more passengers and lots of storage.
The famed Wakesetter models that have evolved throughout the brand’s history remain, with four models in the LSV range—the 22, 23, 25, and 26—as well as the 24 MXZ, the 23 MXZ, and the 20 VTX. The LSV—or Luxury Sport V-hull—is a traditional towboat but with the Malibu innovation. The range offers versatile lounge areas, seating for up to 18 people depending on the model, and the iconic wake technology. This series balances performance with family-friendliness.
The 23 MXZ and 24 MXZ (M stands for Maximized) take the Wakesetter to new levels, focusing even more on the precision of the wakes. With a pickle-fork bow and ergonomic seating for 16, they pack even more into their compact frame.
For those who are new to watersports or who want a family-friendly vessel without all of the extras, the 21 LX and 21 LXr offer a value-for-money option that is geared towards fun on the water.
Lastly, the current line-up includes the long-standing Response TXi, a well-regarded ski boat which has numerous awards under its belt and is suited to both recreational and professional use.
Throughout its history, Malibu Boats has built many models, and there are plenty to be found on the used market. The Wakesetter models have formed the core of the brand’s line-up for years, as have the Response models. Past models also include the Sunscape LSV and V-Ride.
What are the best Malibu Boats models?
The Wakesetter range has been the core of Malibu’s line-up for decades and has been through many developments in its lifetime. The 23 LSV Wakesetter is one of the best-selling towboats of all time, and remains one of the brand’s flagship models.
