Morgan 382 1979 Diesel Auxiliary Sloop for Sale

This 38 ft Ted Brewer designed auxiliary sloop is a robust cruiser with berths for seven, dinette seating for five, and a roomy standup head with separate shower. Her cruising fin keel and skeg mounted rudder coupled with 17,000 lbs displacement and 6,800 lbs lead ballast driven by 667 SF sail area account for a stable seaworthy offshore sailor. She is solidly built, kindly in a sloppy sea, a classic great traditional foundation for a couple to sail both nearshore cruising and/or distance passage making.

Wide side decks and a broad foredeck makes working forward a safe platform. The cockpit has a wheel helm, cockpit traveler and Tee helm seat. Below, just forward of the companionway, is a port side U shaped galley with a deep double sink, LNG 2 burner cooktop and oven. There is a large traditional icebox and loads of galley storage.

Opposite is a chart table and navigation center with nice joinery work and ample storage forward of the aft double quarter berth. Just forward to port is dinette seating with the table dropping to make a comfortable double berth. Opposite is a traditional berth. Forward of the main cabin portside is a spacious enclosed head with a sink, manual marine toilet, and separate stand-up shower with built in seat. Opposite are various cabinets and hanging lockers. Finally, all the way forward is a traditional Vee berth with clothing drawers and cabinets. This forward cabin is fitted with a lovely arched privacy door.

There is old school craftsmanship varnished mahogany yacht joinery highlighted by a teak and holly sole contributing to an elegant calming feel to the cabin.

This is a classic robust cruiser modernly equipped with excellent sails and an upgraded/newer Yanmar diesel engine. She is in very good shape but has plenty of cosmetic opportunities to upgrade for someone who wants to make this yacht their own.

Other Details Accommodations

The all-wood interior offers volumes of room and storage. The head of the double quarter berth to starboard serves as the seat for the nav area; opposite is a large and efficient galley. In the saloon, the L-shaped seat to port only seats two comfortably at the drop-leaf table. A wide settee and a narrow pilot berth occupy the starboard side. The head is roomy and has a fully enclosed shower.

Designed for Cruising

A teardrop-shaped hull, wide beam, discreet reverse transom, and long overhangs might be the hallmarks of a vintage racing boat, but Ted Brewer designed the Morgan 382 as a cruiser, not as a racer that could also be cruised. From 1977 to 1986, Morgan Yachts and its successor, Catalina-Morgan, built nearly 500 of the Morgan 382 and its later configurations, the 383 and 384. Owners have taken them everywhere.

Visually, the boat is balanced and well proportioned, and the low cabin trunk and 6-inch bulwarks help keep the profile trim. At upward of 17,000 pounds on a waterline of 30 feet 6 inches, the boat is almost in the heavy-displacement category. The hull, however, with its elongated fin keel, skeg-attached rudder, and roundish bilge, isn’t that of a slow cruiser.
