Van Dam Nordia 51 Bm ketch, Designer: van Dam, Builder: Nordia van Dam, Year: 1981, Location Scotland, Length on deck: 52', Beam: 14'8, Draft: 7', £118,000, REF: 3180, Full Specification, Built by Nordia van Dam, Holland in 1981 under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd to Lloyds 100 A4. (unlimited voyaging). One of 14 yachts built to this design. This fine big boat is in excellent ownership and yard maintained. In the spring of 2015 she was repainted, anodes changed, engine service, rig and sails overhauled and more. Now back on her berth after a short sail down the Western Isles, ready to sail away and looking very smart. In August 2015 the anodes were checked again, both engine and hull, the topsides were polished and a new bank of domestic batteries fitted. The sail maker came aboard to check sails and rigging and the mainsail cover went off for repair to a small wear patch. She is now on her berth and ready to sail. This is an owner who really does care for his yacht even if she is for sale so anyone coming to see her will not be disappointed. The yacht has the classic Jongert/Nordia lines. A full long keel, short over-hanging transom stern and racey, raked stem with a plank bowsprit. This is a big, generous, full bodied yacht giving huge volume for accommodation. The covered centre cock-pit arrangement, part hard roof part tented, makes for very comfortable sailing in all weathers. Indeed, the cock-pit can quickly become another living space. With her powerful engine, roller head-sails and stac-pak booms she is manageable by 2 despite her size. This big volume hull allows for 3 separate twin bunk sleeping cabins, a lower saloon with comfortable seating below deck in addition to the large covered cock-pit, a practical galley and 2 heads and showers. The hull has a generous freeboard which allows full head-room all through below under a largely flush deck leaving plenty of clear and uncluttered deck space. The walk-in engine is mid-ships under the cock-pit. The saloon cabin has a coach-roof raised over it between the cock-pit and the main mast with windows and twin Lewmar deck hatches for ventilation. Forward, a 4” step down into the forward accommodation allows full head-room. The aft cabin is accessed either directly from the back of the cock-pit or by a walk-through passage below deck to stbd past the galley. The yacht is finished below in all varnished, nice quality, rich rosewood joinery. The exterior hull has a broad blue stripe round the gunnel which disguises the rectangular port lights, with white hull, deck and superstructure. From the aft cabin bunks there is a wonderful view of the yacht’s wake through the large windows in the transom! The yacht was built for a Swiss owner, purchased by an English owner in around 1999 and in his ownership sailed round the world and back to UK in 2007. Purchased by the present owners in 2009 and sailed to the Clyde where she has been this retired couple’s cruising home. Sadly, family commitments ashore look like forcing them miles from the sea so the yacht will not get the use she deserves and must be sold. Steel hull and deck. Nordia yachts built at the van Dam yard using Lloyds approved Grade A Siemens Martin ship-building steel. All seams are welded both sides using CO2 arc welding equipment. Stainless steel bar rubbing strake cleverly avoids the inevitable rust streaks on a steel hull. 4mm deck plating with 50mm insulation below. Scupper drains down to the wl avoid atmospheric dirt stains down the topsides. Scrubbed teak capping to the toe rails. 3 water-tight bulkheads below including the collision bulkhead at the chain locker forward. Encapsulated lead ballast within the keel. Double bottom contains the tanks – fresh water, waste water and fuel – all with stainless steel filler pipes and breathers. Oil filled rudder with stainless steel stock on bronze and nylon bush bearings. Steering with traditional ship’s wheel and cables to a quadrant on the head of the rudder stock under the aft cabin. Armoured glass windows all round in stainless steel frames. The stem is extended forward to form an integral bowsprit and fitted with an 18” varnished teak stub extension to carry the outer forestay. The hull is protected inside and out with an epoxy paint primer system and finished with high gloss exterior. The hull was completely repainted Summer 2014, touched up and polished again in August 2015. Stainless steel pulpit, push-pit and stanchions all round. Heavy duty stainless steel davits over the stern carry the inflatable dinghy. 6 separate bilge compartments pumped through an engine room valve chest which allows compartment selection. Salt water deck wash. Fresh water deck shower, On purchase in 2008 a survey revealed some suspect areas in the hollow keel sections. The keel was cut open, the interior cleaned and preserved and new plating welded into the keel profile. All work photographed. Various seacocks renewed in 2002, 2004 and 2014. The windscreen and shelter over the cock-pit are built in hardwood, varnished inside, white painted outside. Clearview fitted to the centre window, wipers on the side windows. The forward part of the cock-pit is sheltered with a fixed roof. The after part of the cock-pit is fitted with a zip on tent, windows all round, door flaps each side thus transforming this large cock-pit into a deck saloon. Rig. Cutter headed bermudian ketch rig on gold anodised aluminium masts and spars. The main mast is stepped in a shoe on the coach-roof with granny bars each side. The mizzen mast is stepped on the after deck just aft of the cock-pit, Single swept up spreaders to the mizzen. Stainless steel standing rigging, all replaced new in 2000 and overhauled 2014. Swaged terminals, stainless steel rigging screws to internal stainless steel chain plates. The masts are very well stayed. Main mast with twin lowers, intermediates and double cap shrouds round double up-swept spreaders. Twin standing back-stays to the aft deck. Inner stemhead fore stay to the upper spreaders, Outer bowsprit end fore stay to the masthead. Mizzen mast with twin lowers, intermediates and cap shrouds round single up-swept spreaders, overhauled 2014. Twin standing back-stays to the stainless steel davits over the stern. Winches.
