Owners Comments

Xanthus of Sark–  Essex Yacht Builders UK

Xanthus of Sark' is in Croatia..She was moulded in 1972 and fitted out 1974 by the Essex Yacht Co England. She is made of GRP and is the 'Buccaneer' version with the raised poop deck and large stern state cabin. She is ketch rigged with tan sails. She still has her original 72 horse power Perkins 4236 engine which has never let me down.

I am only the second owner.I bought her in Malta in 1996.From there I cruised with my wife Muriel and my three sons and their partners to Sicily and Tunisia.Later we cruised the Greek Ionian islands for some years before moving to Croatia where my sons still join us from time to time.

We only live aboard during the summer and lay her up ashore during the winter when we return to our home in Surrey.

Note from owners son with additional useful info.-

I am Peter's son, Paul. I have been sailing Xanthus for over 20 years, so know her intimately. I am responding on behalf of my father for ease.

My father is only the second owner of Xanthus, having bought her in 1995. The first owner had the boat made for him and moved it to the Mediterranean soon after. He maintained it it to Lloyds A1 standard until he sold it to my father. The boat has been maintained to a high standard for its age by my father ever since, in which time we have all enjoyed family holidays on it every year cruising the med.

The hull is in very sound condition and is showing no signs of osmosis. In fact, the boat has been stored on land almost all of its life, only being in the water for around 8 weeks of every year. The hull under the water line is in excellent condition as it was stripped back about 5 years ago and new epoxy layers applied, followed by antifouling. The top sides are in sound condition but are a bit dulled from the sun. The gel coat on the decks was sanded back and re gel coated around 5 years ago and again is in sound condition for the age of the boat.

New foresail roller reefing was fitted about 15 years ago and is still in good condition. The standing rigging has not been replaced since we have owned the boat but has been maintained and some parts replaced.  All the running rigging has been replaced at various times and ranges from good to new in condition. There are also loads of spare halyards miles of mooring lines etc. The spars are original and show some age but all in good working order, as are all the winches

The sails have not been replaced since my father bough the boat. They are tan, reasonably sound but faded. There are also a number of other sails including storm jib etc which are original but have hardly been used so look almost new.

The engine has been meticulously serviced and maintained by my father every year including oil change, fresh water flushing, laying up for winter etc. Various parts have been replaced over the years and there are also numerous spares. The engine has never failed in over 20 years of use, starts 1st time every time and runs smoothly with plenty of power.

I do not know how much it would cost to bring her back over land but would estimate around £8k.

Xanthus is over 40 years old, which must be taken into account and whilst not essential, she would certainly benefit from some new sails. But Salars were made bullet proof and she has been lovingly taken care of by my father and her previous owner. She is still going strong and continues to provide us with enjoyable cruising. My father has priced her low in my opinion and she will make a great boat for the right owner. We will be very sad to see her go.

If you need any more info I would be more than happy to assist or talk to any prospective purchasers.
