While Sea Fox was first launched as a company in 1995, its origins go much further back. The Renken family, who founded and still run Sea Fox, had been involved in the production of boats for decades before, and despite Renken Boat Works ultimately closing in the recession of the early ‘90s, Freddy Renken and his brother Eddy started Sea Fox Company and produced their first boat that same year. So the Renken family has an uninterrupted 65-year record of building boats—In the space of 10 years their production went from 70 boats to over 3,000 per year.
Sea Fox's range of boats has fishing as its central focus, whether that's offshore in its center console or side console models, or inshore in the Bay Fox series.
Sea Fox Boats are manufactured to withstand the hard conditions often placed on an offshore fishing vessel. They're built to offer durability and dependability on the water, and are built with a composite-cored hull supported by fiberglass stringers that create strength and minimal flexing. This has meant that their reputation as sound used boats makes them sought-after, especially those built in recent years.
Throughout its history, Sea Fox has built many models of boats, and they are well represented on the used market. Popular used models no longer in production include smaller models such as the 186 Commander, the 197 Center Console, and the 199 Center Console. Ranges such as the Viper and Avenger—which were discontinued in 2021 and 2022, respectively—are commonly found on the used market too.
The current line-up is noticeably larger, with four series—Commander, Traveler, Side Console, and Bay Fox—offering models ranging from 22 to 36 feet in length. The Commander range is the brand's flagship, with six models of serious blue water fishing boats. The smallest is the 228 Commander, a practical, capable, and good-looking compact fishing center console. With an impressive list of standard features and optional extras such as a hardtop, a head, and upholstery or paintwork packages among many, there is scope to really customize it.
The same can be said for the rest of the Commander series, all the way up to the 368 Commander, with its twin or triple Yamaha outboards, a seemingly endless list of fishing accessories, dive/fish door, and spacious cockpit with hardtop. The entire range focuses on serious fishability and high spec accessories.
The Traveler series of three models—the 228, 268, and 288—have kept that fishability but added in some welcome comforts such as an electric ceramic toilet, a galley with freshwater sink, and a full glass windshield. With accessories such as a pressurized livewell with window, huge amounts of storage, a suite of electronics and audio equipment, and the Ultima Hard Top as standard, they're impressively equipped for anglers and day trippers.
The 248 Side Console mostly resembles the Commander series with the side console allowing for more lounging space, while the Bay Fox series has brought a different dimension back to Sea Fox. While there was a lull in the production of bay boats, the 231 and 251 Sea Foxes offer a much-appreciated option. They have a shallower draft, Ultima hardtop with glass windshield, Yamaha F300XCB, and a suite of accessories—we're talking LED packages, Bluetooth stereo, plush bow seating, and fresh water washdown.
What Sea Fox boat models are popular?
The 246, 266, and 288 Commander models have long proved popular and are well-represented on the used market as such. Indeed, the Commander series continues to be Sea Fox's flagship range. The more recently discontinued ranges such as Viper, Avenger, and Voyager have also proved popular as they offer excellent value for money for a vessel that's only a few years old byetut still retains the innovation and craftsmanship the brand is known for.
Why should I buy a Sea Fox boat?
Sea Fox boats are designed for serious offshore or blue water fishing, but with a commitment to family comfort, too. While they do offer the Bay Fox bay boat range, the majority of their models, ranging from 22 to 38 feet, are ruggedly designed to withstand the harsh conditions that deep sea fishing presents. With a huge list of standard and optional extras, they can be well-customized to create a comfortable, high spec, and highly capable fishing boat.
