Only the acquisition of a very special Bowman 40 ( also LR100A1 ) has forced the sale of lovely Legionnaire. The time has come for me to go for a slightly more cruising oriented boat. I will miss my lovely Legionnaire, the second SHE 36 I have owned and the fourth SHE owned by my family.
The She 36 is one of the finest and most attractive of the 1970s fast cruisers, designed and built to a very high standard, fit to go to sea in just about anything. "Legionnaire" is a late example of this classic S&S fin and skeg design with the excellent " SHE" deck and lovely teak joinery throughout. Built to Lloyds Register of Shipping 100A1. Modern yachts are simply not built like this anymore.
South Hants Engineering had a strong reputation for building quality Sparkman & Stephens designed yachts up until the early 1980s.
The She 36 was their flagship model, some 46 of which were produced from. Legionnaire (completed summer 1980) was one of the last ones to be built.
There is a close resemblance to the much admired Swan 38, also a Sparkman & Stephens design from the same period. Although only slightly smaller, the difference still helps to make the She 36 a much easier boat to handle short handed. Also, the She-deck is very effective in grip, looks good and is hardwearing and low maintenance, unlike teak decks of this age.
In the notorious 1979 Fastnet Race, a She 36 (Lorelei) recovered eight crew from the sunken yacht Griffin (ODD 34). The French owner & skipper was awarded the 1979 Yachtsman of the Year award & the Legion d' Honneur (the highest French Civilian Medal for bravery). In the publication “Narrative of a Fastnet Rescue” Alain Catherineau (Lorelei’s owner/skipper) made Introductory reference to Sparkman & Stephens (who designed most of Ted Heath’s Morning Clouds):
“Dominating the sailing world for several decades, their knowledge enabled us to carry out a rescue in difficult wind & sea conditions…. This account, which I dedicate to them is an acknowledgement of my indebtedness”.
There is an abundance of historical information (even including original purchase details/correspondence) that comes with Legionnaire.
Legionnaire has recently been subject to a refurbishment, overseen by a Marine Surveyor, for which a Report has been issued. A fine yacht, she is being sold with a heavy heart by the owner as he has purchased a Bowman 40 (also built to Lloyds 100A1).
