DESCRIPTION

2007 Southerly 42 RST

The 2007 Southerly 42 RST features three cabins and two heads, a variable draft swing keel, twin rudders/wheels, a raised salon and nav, and a large aft cabin. Designed by Rob Humphreys and built by Northshore Yachts in England, this vessel is built for ocean crossing. It boasts an impressive sail plan for powerful windward performance and a robust swing keel, allowing for versatility in various waters. With the keel lowered, the variable draft of 8' 11" enables fast blue water cruising. The keel can be raised at the touch of a button for a shallow draft of just 2' 9", ideal for shallow water sailing and coastal exploration.

FriendShip is currently in the water at St. Johns Yacht Harbor on Johns Island, SC.

Interior

Easy companionway steps lead to a large open salon area. The deck salon windows provide panoramic views and create a spacious feeling. Partially reflective tinted glass offers privacy while deflecting sunlight. Concertina blinds cover the deck salon windows for additional shade and privacy. With three cabins, the boat can comfortably sleep eight people. The interior features cherry joinery and teak and holly floors.

Main Salon:

The spacious raised salon accommodates 6-8 people comfortably. The salon table can fold to serve as a coffee table or expand for dining. Large salon windows provide excellent visibility. The table lowers with a button push to convert the seating area into a large double berth. Ample storage is available under the seating and in outboard lockers.

Nav:

The chart table is positioned to starboard and raised for panoramic views. For additional details, see "Navigation and Electronics" below.

Galley:

The galley is located amidships to starboard at a lower level for comfort at sea. For further details, see "Galley" below.

Heads:

There are two heads: one on the starboard side forward of the galley and the other ensuite to the Aft Cabin. A seat covers the head for sitting while showering. Both heads feature an extractor fan and minimal wood for easy cleaning. Storage is available under the sink and in outboard cupboards. Additional features include a manual Jabsco head, a large sink, a shower sump pump, hot and cold pressurized water with a mixer tap, and a waste tank gauge.

Aft Cabin:

The aft cabin includes a large centerline berth and seating on either side, with a split berth for lee cloths. It has three opening ports, an opening hatch, and two fixed hull ports, along with a large hanging locker, outboard lockers, and shelves for clothing storage.

Hull, Deck and Equipment

Hull: Hand laid up heavy-duty GRP molding with multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements for strength and impact resistance. The hull is cored above the water line for insulation and weight reduction, made of solid glass below. Thickness increases toward the keel area. The keel box is integral to the hull layup, with a substantial skeg fitted on the centerline to protect the propeller and rudders when the yacht is dried out.

Swing Keel: The fixed ballast is an iron casting that acts as a grounding plate and transverse stiffening for the keel unit, fitted into a recess in the hull with stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil Swing Keel is cast iron with a stainless steel pivot at the leading edge. It is raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram powered by an electrically driven pump with a hand-operated backup. All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance.

Deck: Teak decks with raised teak-capped bulwarks for comfort and safety. The forward area includes a stainless steel stem head fitting for the bow roller, removable bow sprit, and an electric windlass. Deck salon windows are partially reflective tinted glass for privacy and sun deflection.
