PAN III has a whole lot going for her. There is her wonderfully practical four separate sleeping cabins arrangement allowing for seven guests plus a fo’cs’le with two pipe cots, with the middle of the boat a dedicated social hub. And her design by Sparkman & Stephens from when they were the go-to studio for both out-and-out racing yachts and fast cruiser/racers; she's like a road legal version of the America's Cup 12-Metre INTREPID.PAN III has a whole lot going for her. There is her wonderfully practical four separate sleeping cabins arrangement allowing for seven guests plus a fo’cs’le with two pipe cots, with the middle of the boat a dedicated social hub. And her design by Sparkman & Stephens from when they were the go-to studio for both out-and-out racing yachts and fast cruiser/racers; she's like a road legal version of the America's Cup 12-Metre INTREPID. Then there's her offshore racing pedigree in the hands of original highly successful owner Nello Mazzaferro. And last but not least her extensive range of sensible equipment to allow safe as well as fast and comfortable cruising. PAN III is a classic family fast cruiser almost without equal.

SPARKMAN & STEPHENS DESIGN NO. 2011 Among the last of Olin Stephens' yawl designs (interestingly, design no. 2012 is the iconic Swan 55 - a very close cousin), NITA III is love child of the perfect meeting of aesthetics and competitive spirit in designers and owner, given birth in Rimini by one of Italy's finest builders, Cantiere Carlini. The love affair began with commissioning owner Nello Mazzaferro seeing the earlier S&S/ Carlini 55ft sloop TARANTELLA sailing off Genoa. Named after Mazzaferro's wife and launched, with Rod Stephens in attendance, by Carlini in 1970, NITA III was designed to race under the RORC rule and for family cruising. Through the 1970s, latterly under the IOR Rule, she competed with success in the major Mediterranean offshore events under the burgee of Yacht Club Italiano, with the Mazzaferro's daughter Cristiana included among the crew; crewed by Emanuela Galeazzi she would later become 420 dinghy class World Champion (1980) and IYRU Womens' Worlds Doublehanded Champion (1981). In 1975 NITA III was winner of the Mediterranean Offshore Championship. In the subsequent IOR Rule NITA IV, Nello Mazzaferro would go on to win the prestigious Middle Sea Race three times consecutivelya record not broken until 2014. This was a period of rapid change in yacht racing rating rules, and it is as a fast, very comfortable and much admired cruiser that she has enjoyed the subsequent decades. As HYDRA under her second owner, Florence lawyer Fausto Rusconi, her construction was put severely to the test in a 1980 beaching caused by a violent storm/ tornado in Sicily, resulting in little damage and repaired under the supervision of her original builder. Her third owner, fashion entrepreneur Maria De Marco, cruised gently with professional crew until 1996 when HYDRA passed into present ownership and became PAN III. Extensive family cruises have followed throughout the Mediterranean, including North Africa, Dalmatia and Greece, after which she has always returned home to Rimini to be looked after for ordinary and refit maintenance by Stefano Carlini of Cantiere Roberto & Stefano Carlini, and by Fabio Tosi of Cantiere Navale dell’Adriatico. PAN III made her classic regatta debut in June 2023 at X Trofeo Principato di Monaco (Yacht Club Venezia - AIVE), finishing a respectable mid-fleet in class with a crew of five of a certain age. PAN III has truly enjoyed fifty years of la dolce vita, beloved by owners and the Rimini shipwrights who really respect her. ©2023 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.
