Boat Overview

This is a 1993 standard Tradewind 35 hull featuring a gaff cutter rig with a downwind yard arm.

Interior Layout

The boat includes:

  • A forward double cabin with heads/shower to port.
  • Two saloon settee berths plus a pilot berth to port.
  • Aft starboard quarter berth.

Design and Purpose

Conceived by retired Royal Marine Ewen Southby-Tailyour, the boat was designed for:

  • Exploring and cruising in northern high latitudes.
  • Commercial chartering for professionals such as ‘ographers, ‘ologists, ‘oligers, and mountaineers.
  • Local waters use by friends and family.

Desired Specifications

  • Single-handed sailing capability.
  • Gaff-rigged design.
  • Strengthened for ice around the waterline.
  • Capacity for up to two-and-a-half tons of supplies for up to three months of self-sufficiency.
  • Cross a squares’l yard for comfort when downwind sailing.
  • Black hull for cold-weather climate.
  • Police-approved gun-safe for one rifle and one 12-bore shotgun.
  • Safe for ship’s papers, passports, money, and valuables.
  • Radar fixed high on the mast, VHF, wireless/CD/cassette player with cockpit speakers, and ample paper chart storage.
  • Minimum of six bunks with individual locker space and reading lights.
  • Self-draining wet locker adjacent to the companion ladder.
  • Galley equipped with a two-hob stove, grill, oven, large tub-style fridge, and saltwater hand pump.
  • Warm air heating throughout.
  • Navigation sidelights in the shrouds.
  • Minimal underwater hull fittings.
  • Heads with shower, basin, hot and cold water taps, and ample locker space.
  • Bookshelves in the saloon and above the chart table.

  • Hull to be ‘copperbot’ coated.
  • ‘Bonded stores’ locker sealable by customs.
  • Three anchors, including one Admiralty Pattern for kelp anchoring.
  • Long keel with a keel-hung rudder.

Building and History

Building commenced in early 1993. The copperbot was moulded into the hull, requiring no replacement for at least seven years. The hull was thickened for ice around the waterline, and the interior was designed as specified.

The standard layout includes six berths in two cabins, with options for additional storage. In full expedition mode, 'hot bunking' was common.

Races and Exhibitions

In June 1993, the boat was entered in the Two Handed Round Britain and Ireland Race and the COWES CLASSIC on 19th September 1993. It was exhibited at the 1993 Southampton Boat Show, attracting significant interest.

Subsequent journeys include:

  • GIRONDE 1995
  • ICELAND 1997
  • RBR 1998
  • ICELAND 2000
  • ICELAND 2002
  • FRENCH CANALS 2003 – 2004
  • THE JESTER CHALLENGE 2006

Extensive cruising occurred among the Channel Islands and the north Brittany coast, primarily along the Biscay coast during summer voyages until sold to the current owner, Mark, in 2011.

Current Ownership

Since 2011, the hull has been painted green, and the boat has mainly been sailed in The Solent and the Channel.
