History

Theola is a ketch-rigged Trintella IIIa. A proven ocean cruiser with trips to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean in her early days, she was re-engined, re-wired and had hydraulic steering in 1999. Since then she has been immaculately cared for and cruised.

Currently in preparation for her summer trip to Holland, she is ready for viewing now and will be be available in September - an opportunity to get in first for a much sought-after classic.

History

Designed by E. G. Van de Stadt, built by Tyler Boats of Rochester and fitted out by Offshore Yachts at Royston, Theola was launched at Ipswich in July 1971 with a Lloyds hull certificate THO 4326.

By the following year her owners had travelled through the French canals and were sailing in the Balearics. They spent the following years in the Mediterranean, taking in Corsica and Rhodes on their travels, before Theola was bought by an Italian who sailed her locally until 1985 when her next owner took her, with two friends, across the Atlantic to Barbados and the Caribbean, where she cruised for a few years before returning to Hamburg.

She was 'repatriated' in 1990 and sailed the East Coast, Holland, Belgium and France before her current owner took her on in 1999. After much refurbishment she was once again crossing the North Sea on regular trips through Holland.

Engines and electrics

In 1999 it was decided to replace the old Perkins engine with a 56hp Yanmar and she also acquired hydraulic steering, a new shaft, propellor and rope cutter. At the same time all the wiring was replaced and the electronics were updated.

Now two 110 amp domestic and a 75 amp engine batteries provide the power supported by two 36 watt solar panels.

Navigation

Theola is fully equipped with:

  • Target wind speed and direction
  • Garmin 128 gps
  • Phillips AP Navigator gps
  • Target Navtex
  • JRC LCD1000 radar
  • Simrad RD68 dsc vhf radio
  • Cetrek autopilot
  • Cetrek Chart Nav 340
  • C-net 2000 multi-speed, battery, depth, temperature

Rigging and sails

Both main and mizzen masts as well as the spinnaker pole are silver anodised aluminium.

Besides the in-mast furling mainsail, she has mizzen, furling genoa, working jib, storm jib and cruising chute.
