Activities to do with Westerly Yachts
Westerly Marine Construction started life in 1963 when Denys Rayner built the brand’s very first model, the Westerly 22. From this 22-foot fiberglass sailing cruiser, the brand rapidly grew to become one of Britain's biggest boat builders. By the time the company closed its doors almost 40 years later, its range stretched up to almost 50 feet.
Westerly planned to begin manufacturing with 50 boats per year, but the huge demand meant that number rocketed to 150 in its first few years of trading. It also quickly started exporting its yachts, with the lion’s share going to the United States. By the early 70s, Westerly had had up to 700 staff working across multiple facilities in the south of England.
Throughout the decades Westerly pushed the boundaries of innovation, creating seaworthy, durable, and comfortable cruisers. This included legendary models such as the Spirit, Merlin, Tempest, Storm, and Typhoon. In the early 1990s, with another recession in play, the brand began to rework existing and successful models, changing the interiors and remarketing them as the new Regatta Series. After the takeovers, Westerly produced the Ocean 33 and the Ocean 43 in 1997, its first new models since the 1990 Typhoon was revealed.
Despite takeovers by Victoria Marine of Warsash in 1993 and the Bowman Group in 1994, ultimately closed its doors in 2001. Westerly Yachts are still widely available on the used market however and have stood the test of time thanks to their durability and robust build.
Model ranges/Models of Westerly Yachts
Throughout its long history Westerly Yachts made many models, focusing on the successes of each and improving them year on year. While the company suffered financial difficulties during the economic downturns, it continued to push development and innovation and had a loyal following of sailors.
Some of the brand’s most popular models through the decades included the Westerly Centaur of which 2,500 were built and sold in 10 years starting in 1969, and the early (1980) Westerly 33 which was offered with fin or twin keels, center or aft cockpit, and sloop or ketch rigs.
The 32-foot Fulmar, which also launched in 1980, was renowned for its heavy weather abilities as well as its speed and sportiness, while the brand’s largest models were the 39 foot Sealord and 41 foot Oceanlord. While sales were very strong for these they dwindled when the 36-foot Corsair, one of the brand’s all time most popular models, was launched in 1986.
More recent models and ranges include the Ocean range (the 35, 41, and 48), which was launched in the late 1990s, as well as the Spirit 26, Typhoon 37, and the Regatta range of redesigned yachts based on previous popular models.
