REF: 10135, Full Specification, Wooden Ships Comments, The tale of this William Atkin Bermudan Ketch is a fascinating story of a boat whose keel was laid down in 1965 by a Cardiff craftsman and a build process that is still ongoing today. She has been afloat only once to check her marks and move yards, but other than that she has remained in the yard in a state of ongoing work. The design is believed to be William Atkin ‘Eric’, similar to the ketch Suhali, and after buying the plans the owner set out to build his dream yacht. The rigours of life however meant that the process took longer than expected and now sadly due to poor health and old age she must be sold to someone else to finish off and enjoy at sea. She comes complete with Cetrek navigation instruments, brand new still in their boxes and never fitted. The engine is also brand new, bought in 1973 and installed a few years ago but never run. This is a superb opportunity to obtain a very stout and capable sailing yacht where all the hard work has been done and with a little skill and effort she could be on the water ready to take on the world’s oceans. Large amount of spare gear and equipment not yet fitted to the boat but that comes with her. Construction, Hull, Planked in 1.25″ mahogany all copper rivet fastened to laminated and steam bent oak timbers. Sawn wooden floors across the centreline. External iron ballast keel of 2.5 tons with stainless keel bolts. Decks and cockpit, 3 layers of 12mm marine plywood, screwed and glued together and sheathed with a non-slip cork based deck matting. Varnished toe rail all round with stainless stanchions and guard wires. Self draining cockpit well with the thwarts at deck level and laminated curved coamings. Mizzen mast mounted at the forward end of the cockpit well. Two pairs of sheet winches mounted on blocks on the cockpit coamings. Modern Lewmar watertight hatch at the aft end of the cockpit. Superstructure, Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with rectangular alloy portholes. GRP sheathed coachroof deck with varnished hand rails and hatches. Modern Lewmar hatch forward of the main mast. Rig, Bermudan ketch rig on keel stepped white painted alloy spars. Alloy slab reefing booms and a wooden bowsprit making her cutter headed. Stainless steel standing rigging to stainless rigging screws and external bronze chain plates. Standing backstays on both main and mizzen. Sails, There are no sails with the boat. Winches, 2 pairs of non ST sheet winches on the cockpit coamings, Pair of non ST winches on the aft end of the coachroof, Mizzen mast has 3 winches for reefing pennants and halyard, Main has 2 winches for reefing pennants plus a captive wire halyard winch, Machinery, Engine, Saab 2G 22hp twin cylinder marine diesel. Bought in 1973 and installed much more recently but never used. This is an as new unit in full working order. Requires fitting of dials and some wiring which all comes with the boat. Centreline shaft with a 2 blade variable pitch propeller, Tanks, 2 separate fuel tanks, one each side in the cockpit lockers. Plastic water tank to port of the engine. Accommodation, Berths, 5 berths including 2 saloon settee berths, pilot berth to port and twin single berths up forward. Saloon, Conventional layout with steps down from the companion hatch. Chart desk and galley to port and heads compartment to starboard. Saloon settee berths either side, need upholstery. Heads, Manual sea toilet not fully installed yet. Galley, Space is there for a galley but none has been fitted yet.
