Schooner, proven very suitable for both expedition as well as charter and long or permanent stay on board

The beautiful schooner "Abel Tasman" is derived from the famous “America" designed by George Steer. Although "Abel Tasman" is not a replica she does have the same lines & eye catching grace that sets her aside in any port. She has done countless sea miles all over the world with her 3 owners. For her second owners she became their home & a means to earn a comfortable living while chartering in mostly remote regions in the far north Arctic & the deep Antarctic. Her 3rd owner continued on in the same way but included making herself available for mostly documentary film use. In the last 3 years she has sailed over 46,000nm miles from Europe to the Antarctic, across the Pacific to Australia, north to Japan via New Guinea, to the Kuril Islands, to Kamchatka, the Aluetean Islands, Alaska, Northwest Passage, Greenland, Norway, & Svalbard. Almost all these miles were on charter with film companies & private guests providing a comfortable income & a self perpetuating idilyic life style for the owner.

She has a very desirable & unique classic small ship feel rather than a normal yacht. Her oversize rigging & deck gear give a feel of strength & security at sea consistant with her hull shape. The hull is built of 10 mm steel which makes it suitable for extreme conditions. Her DAF engine & 2000lt fuel tanks provide ample power & about 900nm fuel range. She can carry sufficient food & normal living supplies for 9 people for 3 months. The saloon has a large U-shaped sofa and two comfortable arm chairs The galley has a large stove with oven that also serves as a heater. In the salon is an additional diesel heater and a central heating system warms the rest of the boat. Next to the companionway to starboard is a head with wardrobe for sailing gear. There are 3 double cabins in the bow and one double master cabin portside aft. Furthermore, in the bow is a head with shower and toilet. In the bow is a workspace and storage. In the stern is the engine room where we also find the technical installation including generator, water-maker, & an ample amount of spares to help make the boat as self sufficient as possible. The interior is cozy, practical in design and suitable for long stay on board for a group of up to 9 people. The reluctant decision to sell Abel Tasman is due to a change in situation by the owner but she is ready to go anywhere in the world as a home or as a business or perhaps as a life style where she can do the occasional charter to help defray the costs of owning a true ocean going vessel.

From the skippers point of view: “The "Abel Tasman" is a powerful boat to sail but is easily handled by 2 experienced sailors. Her schooner rig, as opposed to a sloop rig, means smaller sails to handle & less loads on winches & deck gear so reducing wear & tear. As a skipper it often occurs to me how suitable she would be as a training ship. Under the guidance of experienced hands she is the perfect platform to gain experience in sail handling, the understanding of the loads & forces involved, & what sometimes small adjustments make in power & speed. Her comfort at sea is often a source of wonder to people even with many years of ocean sailing behind them. Her displacement, her sail area & ballast ratio all combine to give a ride & feeling of safety unique to this boat. I can only say that the last 46,000nm, often in the wildest of conditions imaginable, have been a pleasure".

This Bermuda Schooner is also to today's standards a very fast boat with a comfortable sea behaviour. This boat is brokered through the White Whale Yachtbrokers Enkhuizen office.
