Vessel Overview

C&C 61 Kohinoor is a custom C&C 61 originally built for Herbert Von Karajan, the conductor of the Berlin Orchestra. The yacht was initially named "HELISARA" and was extensively raced in the Mediterranean. It was sold to a French admiralty lawyer who continued racing her in the Mediterranean. The current owner purchased this yacht in January 1984 and sailed her across the Atlantic to Antigua. It was raced in Antigua Race Week 1984 and then sailed north to Bermuda and finally to the Great Lakes. Kohinoor was raced occasionally in the lakes until 1992, at which point it underwent a 10-year refurbishment where nearly everything was upgraded or replaced. It returned to the lakes in the fall of 2002 and was shipped to Seattle in the fall of 2003. A complete repaint of the topsides and bottom was done at that time, and it was moored at Roche Harbor in 2004, remaining there until 2006 when it was again put on the hard until fall of 2010.

Refurbishment Investment

More than $1,200,000 has been spent on the complete refurbishment of this fine yacht. It is only with great sacrifice that this yacht is now for sale.

Design and Construction

The design was originally commissioned by Tom Fisher of Detroit, aiming for a fast cruiser capable of handling the 12 meters of the day on a boat-for-boat basis. He imposed a stringent draft restriction of eight feet as his home waters were Lake St. Clair. The construction of the yacht proceeded in 1969, with C&C Yachts Limited being assembled from four small firms. The C&C 61 was, to the best of knowledge, the largest production fiberglass boat of the time. This hull features 15 layers of fiberglass with double balsa core in stressed areas, making it extremely substantial.
