Iain Oughtred Ptarmigan sailing dinghy. First launched in 1994 and built as part of a Classic Boat magazine competition.

The Ptarmigan was designed by Oughtred based on a 19^th Century ships boat and intended as a safer and more capable alternative to the Acorn skiff. The stiffer bilges and flatter sole sections make her a stiffer boat than something like the Acorn, more stable and able to carry heavier loads. Having said this the Ptarmigan still rows beautifully and sails very well.

The boat came with 2 rig options, either the simple standing lug, or as with this boat the gunter sloop. This latter option gives better performance, takes a little longer to set up but will all stow largely within the length of the boat for travelling.

She was bought by the late owner from the builder and not used much by either owner. She has spent most of years inside a garage and lavished with care and attention. The limited extent of her use is evident in her current condition.

Complete with a road trailer and combination launching trolley, oars and rig she presents more like a piece of furniture than a boat. The boat also has original building plans and a detailed book on the construction of the boat.

A superb little dinghy built to a very high standard and ready to go sailing.

Construction

• Clinker planked in 6mm marine plywood with epoxy glued lands.
• Iroko stem and keel with a mahogany transom.
• Narrow side decks with fore and aft decks made from diagonally laid mahogany glued over a marine plywood sub deck. Mahogany coamings with oak capping rails.
• Pair of oak rubbing strakes either side.
• Iroko thwarts and hanging knees with a plywood centreboard case.
• Centreboard made from solid mahogany, raised and lowered by hand.
• Drop plate rudder in solid mahogany with bronze hangings.

Rig

• Gunter sloop rig on solid varnished pine spars.
• Stainless steel standing rigging with lanyards to tension, fastened to inboard bronze chain plates.
• All bronze mast fittings.
• Mainsail sheets to a rope horse across the transom.
• Jibs sheets to jamming cleats on the midships thwart.
• Mainsail and jib in cream terylene wit brown stitching gives the fell and look of traditional sails. The stitching is a small detail that shows the builder really knew what he was doing and paid attention to the small items that can make a real difference.
