Lazy Days offers a fine example of a 1930s twin screw motor cruiser with a fascinating history. She is a capable sea going vessel which suits inland cruising equally well. She is well documented and a proud member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships. ADLS Members page - Lazy Days. Lazy Days owners have reserved their crossing with the fleet for the May 2025 return so a new owner would automatically benefit from the opportunity, which arises only every 5 years, to actually take part in the prestigious commemoration which begins with the accompanied crossing from Ramsgate to Dunkirk.
Her history is well documented. Built alongside the Aire and Calder Navigation in Castleford in 1930, it is believed that Lazy Days was attached to HMS. Wildfire during the Second World War. At the time of Dunkirk, she is known to have been owned by M.V. Lazarus and spent three days ferrying troops from East Beach amid fierce air attack. She returned to England with many of her ribs broken at the waterline.
After Dunkirk, while on parachute mine patrol, a mutiny occurred aboard Lazy Days. Her Petty Officer, who was a hard-bitten, yacht skipper, took exception to the green young Lieutenant who came aboard when she was duty boat. The PO had a pint too many at lunchtime and when the young Lieutenant nagged him about the course he was steering, he hit him. He was sentenced at a Chatham Court Martial to 90 days in the glasshouse. But while being escorted from Chatham to Bristol, he gave his escort the slip and disappeared.
Lazy has been apart of the ADLS for over 40 years and in 2015 had a well deserved and comprehensive restoration prior to the last Dunkirk return (2020 having been cancelled due to the pandemic restrictions).
Lazy Days has a lovely interior featuring sleeping for four adults in two separate cabins, a decent head with electric toilet and shower plus a very serviceable galley, ample dining space inside and out. One of the particularly appealing features is the generous aft cockpit which is also perfect for entertaining 6-8 guests. There is an all weather awning for passages at sea and generally inclement weather.
Twin Beta Marine 50 hp diesels take care of smooth passage. As you would expect for a vessel which has been updated within the last decade a black water was fitted and the electrics all updated. One unusual but excellent feature is the bow thruster which was also installed during the refit and aids dramatically with manoeuvrability.
The current owners bought the boat during lock down and keep her close to home, on their Thames mooring where she is well maintained and slipped regularly.
