Doreen is a fascinating launch with a rich Thames history, beginning with her purchase at the Phillips auction in 1991. According to the catalogue by Bill and Penny Rose, the boat is a gentleman’s beaver tail cabin launch, constructed of mahogany on oak with steamed timbers at approximately 8 inch centres. It features a white painted hull, blue cove line and waterline, as well as varnished decks, cabin sides, and interior. At that time, she was equipped with a Morris Navigator, although it is believed she may have originally had an early Pelapone engine, if indeed she was built in Arundel in 1913. She currently has a Ford Sea Tiger motor, which was rebuilt in 2022.
The forward cockpit can comfortably seat 6 to 8 people, including the skipper. The cabin configuration is particularly appealing, opting for horseshoe seating within the glazed cabin instead of the usual train carriage double bench design. Early enhancements include opening quarter lights and bevelled glass, which significantly enhance the cabin's aesthetic. There is full headroom throughout. Aft of the cabin, louvered doors lead to an anteroom that contains a starboard toilet compartment. While there is no galley, the anteroom is practical for storing cooler boxes and similar items. A further door provides access to a small aft cockpit, facilitating easy locking in and out with two people.
The boat comes with an excellent full-length cover, fenders, warps, ensign, and staff.
Initially, in 1991, the owner took the boat directly from the sale to Peter Freebody. Over the years, she has been cared for by several boatbuilders, including more recently the IBTC in Lowestoft, Henwood and Dean, and Woottens of Cookham. A comprehensive file contains various invoices documenting her ongoing maintenance. The boat is actively for sale as the owners will lose their mooring when their delightful riverside home sells. It comes with a current BSS and EA Thames licence.
In conclusion, Doreen is an unusual boat with over a century of history.
