More about the Lemsteraak De Hoop LobithThe Isalania was built in 1947 at the Shipyard de Hoop in Lobith, still a well-known name in inland navigation. The client was Count Bentinck who lived at Middachten Castle just north of Rheden on the river IJssel. According to the stories, the count liked to sail alone. Nevertheless, in the foreship there was already a galley and accommodation for two servants, in case family or guests were sailing. After the death of the count, Mr. L Hamming from Maastricht bought the ship from his inheritance. For another 35 years, the Hamming family has been sailing the ship, including some thirty years of races such as the Flevorace. Twenty years ago Andre Hoek was commissioned to draw a new rigging plan. The striking bottleneck on which the neck angle of the jib had been run for all those years was removed and the rigging became 1.80 m higher. High and narrow, that made height and speed, especially when combined with a set of new daggerboards. The 24.7 ton vessel, of which only 750 kg was ballast, could easily have the rigging and it actually sailed much higher and faster. The ship has a robust hull with wide strakes that barely taper off. Two wide flat strakes next to the keel and a narrow flared corridor to fill the space between the plates. At a length of 14.61 m over the stem, this Lemsteraak has a weight of 24.7 tons, which is not excessive.
