Builders Comments:

I have built six boats and all were built using the West Systems composite technique. Catbyrd‘s hull from flange to flange is strip plank 1 inch thick by 1.5 inch wide juniper (white cedar) glued together with epoxy. While still upside down 9 ounce unidirectional carbon fiber was laminated on with epoxy with a four foot overlap on the center line then faired with West Systems epoxy and 410 microlite. Once turned over the inside of the hulls were laminated with 12 ounce biaxial Kevlar. All top sides and decking panels were constructed with 3mm 3 ply ockumme plywood and different densities of core material (ingrained balsa, venticell, corecel and divinicell closed cell structural foam) as structural scantlings dictated. All panels were vacuum bagged and glassed to seal and provide a tough waterproof coating in preparation for painting. The only wood not glassed is the interior maple joinery. However all joinery was double coated with clear epoxy. There is no exposed raw wood on Catbyrd.
