DESCRIPTION

Moody 336 – 1994 - Sensibly priced at £44,500

Designed by Bill Dixon and built by Marine Projects (Plymouth) under the Moody brand, the Moody 336 is a highly successful design with approximately 200 units produced. This model is known for its comfortable and reliable cruising capabilities, as well as excellent sailing performance, having achieved numerous class wins at regattas. The design accommodates up to 6 people, featuring a spacious master cabin aft and a large heads compartment with a separate shower area.

This Moody 336 Mk II, named ‘Sky Song of Dart’, is a lightly used example with only 3 owners since its delivery in 1994. It comes with a cruising inventory that includes:

  • Recent Raymarine plotter, Autopilot system & VHF.
  • Volvo Penta MD2030 28hp, 3-cylinder indirectly cooled marine diesel engine.
  • PSS dripless stern gland seal.
  • Kiwi 3-bladed, feathering propeller with rope cutter.
  • Pressurized hot and cold water system.
  • Electric anchor windlass with wireless remote.
  • Fully battened mainsail with ‘Stackpack’ and lazy jack system.
  • Sprayhood.
  • LED overhead lighting.

‘Sky Song of Dart’ is a notably clean example of this successful design, with significant recent upgrades and consistent maintenance performed by the current owners over their 5 years of ownership.

Accommodation

The Moody 336 offers six berths across two separate sleeping cabins plus saloon berths. ‘Sky Song of Dart’ features re-upholstered mid-blue cushions throughout, replacing the original white velour fabric with red pin stripes. The optional teak and holly finished sole boards in the main saloon have been stripped and re-finished. As a Mk II version, the galley locker doors are finished in teak, and the saloon includes stainless steel fiddled book shelves. The M336 has a more generous heads compartment compared to its contemporaries and a remarkably accommodating galley, while the innovative aft cabin set a standard for future designs.

Forecabin:  2 berths arranged in a generally ‘V’ shape, with a curved design for more floor space. The berths are positioned forward in the cabin, with lockers behind the head of the berths; deep hanging locker to starboard and two shelved lockers to port. Two fiddled cave lockers are above each berth, suspended beneath the side decks. Access to the chain locker is through a hinged trap at the foot end of the berths. All space beneath the berths is accessible for bulk storage, as the water tanks are located beneath the settee berths in the main saloon. An aft-facing deck hatch provides light and ventilation. A single gang 240V AC, 13A socket is available. A 1 kg dry powder fire extinguisher is mounted behind the door.

Saloon:  Features U-shaped seating to port around a centerline table and a single settee berth to starboard. Although the freshwater tanks are beneath the seating, some bulk storage is available on the port side’s seating returns. Moody’s typical cave lockers are behind the seating’s backrests. Light and ventilation come from two fixed windows in the coach roof, along with a hatch above the saloon table. LED bulbs have replaced the filament bulbs in the overhead lighting. The flooring consists of teak and holly veneered plywood panels that have been stripped and re-finished recently. A 1 kg dry powder fire extinguisher is located at the chart table. A CD/radio player is fitted, with overhead stereo speakers mounted in the overhead panels.

Chart Table:  Located on the starboard side, facing aft, with seating on the aft end of the starboard settee berth. The main 12V DC distribution board is mounted alongside the navigator’s left shoulder. Storage drawers are within the chart table’s pedestal, and additional fiddled small-item storage is provided outboard of the table.

Galley: Features an L-shaped layout with a curved return accommodating a top-access and lift-out rubbish bin. Access from the centerline leads to a large shelved locker and cutlery drawer, in addition to the usual shelved locker beneath the sinks. Above, four locker doors provide dedicated crockery storage and storage for cooking staples, while below, two sliding doors close additional storage at work surface level. The top-access fridge is relatively large for a late eighties design, featuring an internal shelf and ice-making provision. The ‘Atlantic’ cooker by Plastimo is original, with two hob burners, grill, and oven. The gas installation has been regularly inspected and certified over the last five years of current ownership. A removable panel supplements the galley work surface when the cooker is not in use.

Heads Compartment:  Spaciously located to starboard at the foot of the companionway steps, the M336’s heads compartment is a major design feature. It includes a dedicated, separated shower area with a mixer tap and teak grated shower sump, drained overboard by a 12V pump. The handbasin is integrated into a cleverly designed top over a conventional locker space, providing more storage than typically achieved. A marine-flushing toilet by Jabsco is manual and flushes directly overboard. Good light and ventilation are provided by two opening portlights in the coach roof, along with a hatch above the shower area.

Aft Cabin: The M336 offers a class-leading aft cabin design. A generous double berth runs fore and aft to the starboard side beneath the cockpit well, behind the engine space, accessed from a footwell to the port side. The design allows for some seating, and the long footwell beneath the aft end of the coachroof provides good headroom. A deep hanging locker is fitted behind the access door, with a fixed mirror on the aft side of the locker. An opening portlight to the starboard side of the cockpit well, along with a fixed port to the transom and an overhead hatch above the footwell, provide light and ventilation.
