DESCRIPTION

1991 Morgan Ocean 31

true full keel vessel, transom hung rudder, and 12,000LBs of displacement.

A lifetime of adventure awaits.

This is a South African Morgan Ocean 31, a beloved, full-keel production yacht of the region, built by Morgan Mosenthal Marine in Durban, SA (not American Morgan sailboats designed by Charley Morgan).

Cherie is a "Morgan Ocean 31" or "Morgan 31" Known as a "no-nonsense 10M ocean cruising yacht" and a "pocket-cruiser" designed by Angelo Lavranos and built by Morgan Mosenthal Marine in Durban, South Africa. Owner finished and launched in 1991, 25 of these yachts were constructed in total.

31-feet LOA, a full-keel, thoroughbred ocean cruising beast. Owned by a 37 year boat building veteran. One owner vessel.

53,000 Nautical Miles, three Panama Canal transits. Owned by lifelong boat builder and family. One owner. Launched and finished in 1991. Cruised for 12 years the WORLD, beginning in South Africa (Cape of Good Hope), Settled in Raleigh, NC and now retired to Puerto Rico.

Engine absoutely immaculate and refit in 2017, with perfect maintenance, this engine is only at half of its lifespan; and will probably never put that many more hours its lifetime unless you are extremely adventurous! Golden Globe Around the World Race, perhaps? This boat would certainly be a contender. Built to withstand the Southern Ocean.

"A thoroughbred, not a race horse." South African sailing yacht Cherie has crossed the Atlantic to Brazil. Explored the Amazon, the Caribbean, Trinidad, Florida, the Chesapeake Bay, St Martin this boat was safe! Outrunning devastating hurricanes in Guadalupe, Dominica, St. Lucia. This boat has endured hurricanes worth buckets of rain, a knockdown on a Pacific Ocean crossing and still been dry/no worse for wear (rigging replaced as needed).

This boat is SOLID.

Ecuador, Marquesas, New Zealand, Micronesia, Hawaii to San Francisco, Southern California, Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Columbia, San Blas Islands, Aruba , Bonaire, Cauricou, circuit of Caribbean, Okechobee Waterway. Gulf of Mexico..

A young family of three cruising full-time. The captain wanted to go around Cape Horn, the vessel more than capable. But life had other plans. Became U.S. citizens, worked a career as a marine carpenter and in boat-works. So, this vessel is pristine.

This boat is rumored to have Camper Nicholson influence or be a copy of a genuine mold and altered by designer (LaVranoes). But LaVranoes is said to be directly influenced by the North Atlantic 29.

This boat is a real head turner. A proper little ship designed and tested to withstand any condition.

All stainless steel hardware is the best of the best made in Durban, South Africa, and the mast/boom made in Cape Town.

Some highlights are: custom tanks, arch, dodger, aluminum toe rails, stainless grab handles on the deck, stainless steel tubing, chainplates.

Standing rigging replaced every 10 years approx, as only cruised / launched for 12 years.

Sail maintenance includes rebuilt slides / full betten pocket rebuild , stays replaced often through sailing trips forestay, backstay, cap shrouds, over time all done various times when needed. Meticulous with caring for all the equipment and never left the sails in the sun, or badly folded

Engine details:

Type: Yanmar

Model: 3GMD

Year: 1991 year launched

HP : 20 and 22.5 at full revolutions

Engine hours : 7796

Engine meticulously maintained, only ever used Shell Rotella Diesel Engine oil in the sump. Oil was changed every 100 hours, valve clearances checked and adjusted at the intervals indicated in the engine maintenance manual.

Yanmar parts always available and plentiful

Engine complete overhaul/ refurbished 2017, removed from then returned to/realigned on the boat.

New engine oil circulation lines, as well as the water pump, cooling manifold and exhaust mixing elbow.

The water cooling system (engine is raw water cooled) was cleaned out and flushed during this time. Never any issues with its cooling systems and zinc anodes protecting the internal cooling passages were always replaced at the intervals the manual indicated.

Fuel tanks: There are two tanks. Both are made from 316 stainless steel.

The main tank located low in the bilge beneath the engine, holds 280 liters. Fuel gets pumped up to a 43 liter header tank situated next to the engine in the engine compartment. It has a sight glass, which can be easily checked, simply by opening the front engine compartment door.

The fuel gets pumped through a filter before it enters the header tank. It gets filtered again before it enters the engine fuel pump and is filtered a last time by the engines’ own filter.

All filter elements are easily checked and replaced and can be purchased at regular auto parts stores. The header tank also has a bottom drain cock with dirt trap which allows for the removal of any dirt and debris in the fuel.

Fuel always was treated with Biobor diesel fuel additive from day one, through its entire life.

The engine consumes 1.6 liters per hour, and with a total capacity of 323 liters means it can run 200 hours with that fuel.

Fuel system is set up so that you can either fill the deep tank on its own or by shutting off valves, you can direct flow into the header tank only. This is for filling with deck storage jerrycans when the deep tank is empty. Every drop can thus be used. This feature came in handy on several occasions!
