Boat Overview

This delightful slipper stern launch, named Windflower, was built in 1962. It was originally transported by the Andrews family tractor to a freight train bound for Windermere, where it was ordered by a Cumbrian resident for lake enjoyment. After being kept in a covered boathouse, it returned south to the Thames a couple of decades later.

Ownership History

A couple on Temple Island purchased the boat and renamed it Scheherazade. In the early nineties, the current owner discovered the boat in an advertisement in the Maidenhead Advertiser, where it was on a trailer in a garden near Temple Lock. He was captivated and has owned her since then. After thirty years, he decided to undertake a complete overhaul, leading to a 3-year restoration completed last year by Stanley & Thomas of Old Windsor, with delays caused by the sale of the boatyard and the pandemic.

Restoration Details

The restoration included:

• A new hull
• Most of the deck (some replaced by Freebody in the eighties)
• Mahogany sourced for a good color match
• Windscreen surround replacement
• Replacement of most bearers and several hull frames
• Removal and polishing of the forward deck and all fittings
• Hull finished in varnish rather than paint
• Seating features two wooden seats with cushions instead of thirties Lloyd Loom chairs

Engine and Technical Specifications

Under the foredeck lies the original engine from the sixties, which is petrol-powered. It has been renovated, repainted, and fitted with electronic ignition. Additionally, the bearings, rudder, fuel tank, and other components have been replaced. The BSSC is valid through 2024.

Current Status

When afloat, Windflower has been moored at the bottom of the owner's garden in Cookham. After acquiring a year-round classic boat, the owner has decided to sell Windflower as it is now surplus to requirements. Viewing on the trailer is available by appointment at the Beale Park boat store.
