Introducing Gynnie Anne, a 1997 Catalina 320 offered by her original owner. The Catalina 320 is a well-regarded sailboat that combines performance, comfort, and practicality, making it a popular choice among cruising enthusiasts. Designed by Gerry Douglas, the Catalina 320 was introduced in the early 1990s and quickly gained a reputation for its spacious interior, solid construction, and ease of handling.
The Catalina 320 features a modern design with a plumb bow and a nearly vertical transom, which maximizes waterline length and improves performance. The hull is constructed of solid fiberglass, providing durability and strength. The deck is cored with plywood and end-grain balsa, which helps to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.
One of the standout features of the Catalina 320 is its spacious cockpit, which is designed for comfort and functionality. The cockpit includes long bench seats, a large steering wheel, and easy access to winches and controls, making it ideal for both cruising and racing. The boat also features a walk-through transom with a swim platform, adding to its appeal for recreational sailors.
The rigging on the Catalina 320 is designed to be easy to handle, even for a short-handed crew. The mast is deck-stepped and features double spreaders, which provide additional support and stability. The sail plan includes a large mainsail and a smaller jib, which makes the boat easy to balance and control. The boat is equipped with Lewmar self-tailing winches, which simplify sail handling and trimming. She received new standing rigging in 2016 and new main, genoa, and Dutchman in 2021.
Gynnie Anne is fitted with a wing keel version which has a shallow draft of 4.25 feet, making it suitable for cruising the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
Below deck, Gynnie Anne offers a spacious and comfortable living area. The interior is finished with varnished ash battens, teak bulkheads, and a teak and holly sole, giving it a warm and inviting feel. The main saloon features two settees and a dining table that can be converted into a double berth, providing additional sleeping space for guests.
The galley is well-equipped for cruising, with a double stainless-steel sink, a two-burner stove with an oven, and a large refrigerator. There is ample storage space for provisions and cooking equipment, making it easy to prepare meals on board. The navigation station is located to starboard and includes a chart table and space for electronics and instruments.
Gynnie Anne has two private cabins, one forward and one aft. The forward cabin features a V-berth with storage lockers and shelves, while the aft cabin has a large double berth and additional storage space. She is missing her aft mattress and is being used currently as a “garage”. The head is located aft of the main saloon and includes a marine toilet, a sink, and a shower with a sump pump.
The Catalina 320 is known for its good performance under sail. The boat is well-balanced and easy to handle, making it suitable for both experienced sailors and those new to cruising. The sail plan and rigging are designed to provide good performance in a variety of conditions, with the boat capable of reaching respectable speeds both upwind and downwind. Her rigging was replaced in 2016 by Tidewater in Havre de Grace. Her shoal draft keel (4'3") makes her perfect for the Chesapeake Bay.
The boat is powered by a Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine, with approximately 750 hours, which provides reliable and efficient propulsion when motoring. The engine is located under the companionway steps, providing easy access for maintenance and servicing.
Owners of the Catalina 320 often praise the boat for its spacious interior, comfortable cockpit, and ease of handling. Many owners appreciate the boat’s solid construction and attention to detail, which contribute to its durability and longevity. The boat’s performance under sail is also frequently mentioned, with many owners noting that it is both fast and responsive.
The 1997 Catalina 320 is a versatile and capable sailboat that offers a great balance of performance, comfort, and practicality. Its spacious interior, solid construction, and ease of handling make it an excellent choice for cruising couples and families. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer voyage, the Catalina 320 is a reliable and enjoyable boat that will meet your needs on the water.
She is currently on her way to Haven Harbour South Marina in Rock Hall, Md.
